i have a comment....

there are prgrams that block people from burning cds.
just the other day, i tried to burn dehumanizer and is shot back out
saying something like no data available.

Couldn't M*A just used this blocking for a couple extra bucks
and none of this would ever have happened?
seems alittle ignorant to me...

I'm sure Metallica's new CD will have the latest copy protection, and I can assure you that it will be no problem for pirates. Technology moves too fast, and the copy protection technology is moving slower than the pirating tech.

Here's another reassuring bit of news from another Lars radio interview,

"Having alot of fun playing some really fast stuff again, and I mean fast. Really aggressive, aggro, alot of the starts and stops....

10-12 songs

he also made a comment about their attitude towards fast stuff after doing shit like Battery, and Master of Puppets. He said they thought they had done it, got it out of their system but he says they were pretty much wrong because the new album is around 70 minutes of tha type of stuff.

Man, this really gets me wondering what the new album is going to be like.

I don't want to get to excited, cuz it might flatout suck. but I'm hoping that it's not going to suck ass that much.

they won't be the same as in the old days for me, but a good album wouldn't hurt them and I would probably want it in my cd collection anyway.
I'm going to see them live this year, I wonder how it'll end out and I wonder if they're going to play any old stuff..

Geeeee....What the fuck is Metallica doing? I can't trust 'em. I'm not gonna get my hopes up and expect something goood. Part of why Metallica has gone to shit in my mind is Jame's vocals. He just doesn't have it like he used to. His voice sucks now, it's all cracky and shitty sounding. The new stuff might sound cool, but I bet the vocals will suck cock.

Someone at Met's studio board brought this little 6 second clip back to life and posted it. I'm glad he did, I had forgotten about it and it's sort of proof that there indeed is a faster, more aggressive Metallica in store.

It's from an older studio vid, and if I'm not mistaken it's only heard because Bob is blasting it in the control room and someone opens the door, letting it out while Lars is is trying to get Bob's attention. Which is why you'll hear Lars saying "Bob, bob, bob" over the clip.

Here ya go.

yeah, the video of them playing hit the lighs was cool and all, but all the audio clips you hear and even in that video, james's vocals sound really messed with. Maybe thats how they naturally are without practice and shit, but when he goes to hit the "high"er notes he is off (on the vid). Maybe its on purpose or not. But it didn't sound to cool.

art- You gotta remember that they were still tracking James' vocals, so naturally his voice is gonna sound worn down. Aside from singing shit for the new album over and over and over, James has been screaming alot more too.

Just got done watchin the new studio video, and thought I would share with you guys that Lars has said there "are no singles on this album".

He went on to say basically it's not your average radio friendly Metallica.

Kerrang: METALLICA's 'St. Anger' Is Band's Finest Effort To Date

METALLICA's forthcoming effort, "St. Anger", is nothing short of "the finest thing [the band] have put their name to," according to the latest issue of Britain's Kerrang! magazine, which recently had an opportunity to preview a couple of the cuts set to appear on the CD. "The volume is intoxicating, the songs even more so," the report continues. "METALLICA haven't gone backwards, they have gone elsewhere, somewhere they haven't really gone before. Much of the speed is back — speed that recalls the days of 'Battery' and 'Dyers Eve'. But the format is remarkedly different. This isn't controlled aggression, much of it is uncontrolled violence. It's ironic that at a time when the band are so at peace with one another they should make an album that sounds like they're at war. As one track follows the another — there are only working titles like 'Monster' and 'Frantic' — the difference not only between what you expect but what has gone becomes clear. There's no space between the drums and the guitars, there are riffs everywhere, there is anger and confusion — 'Do not know the answer, I don't know what the question is' is one lyric - there is swearing and shouting and time changes and speed and fury. It is difficult on a first listen not to surmise that 'St. Anger' is the finest thing METALLICA have put their name to. All the songs I'm assured, sound like this. There are no ballads. Instead there's an assault of speed and volume and anger and intensity. This is exactly the kind of thing that made a slogan such as 'Birth, school, METALLICA, death' an apposite and appropriate summation of everything this band could muster, both in themselves and their audience."

In other news, METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich has revealed in a brand new "Lars Babble" video posted to the "Jump In The Studio" section of the group's official web site that "St. Anger" will not have any kind of encryption device on it, and that the band have set April 4 as the deadline for finishing the record. They will then head to New York for approximately two days to master the album.

Somehow I doubt it's the best thing they've put their name to. Now, a much better work than they've recently put out, that I dont doubt, but best ever? Puh-lease, Kerrang!, do you expect me to believe that?

I'm sure I will laugh. Maybe on the other side of my face but anyway I will.

The album's a much ado 'bout nothing.
There're so many rumours. I've heard that Lars said they will sound like swedish death

PST - True. It's one of those knee-jerk reactions to finally hearing new Metallica material, and AGGRESSIVE material at that. Of course it won't be the best Metallica record, but it'll be damn good.

Nothing Metallica every does will make up for their selling out and years of garbage. IF (and it's a big IF) they start to make real metal again, it will only be to try to regain the same fans they've been screwing for years on end. It will only be to get into those fans' pockets. And it will only be because the mainstream doens't care about Metallica anymore. Metallica will never earn my money. They blew that chance.

I heard some more of the clips and I'm pretty curious, but I think hetfields' voice has changed a bit, but that's probably just me.

METALLICA are leaning towards using their old friend Pushead to design the cover for their forthcoming album, "St. Anger", drummer Lars Ulrich revealed during an interview with Canadian radio station 97.7 HTZ FM. In addition, Ulrich offered two more working songtitles for the upcoming CD: "All Within My Hands" and "Dirty Window". Other known working titles include "St. Anger", "Monster", "Frantic", "Cursed", and "Dead Kennedy Rolls". The station is airing the interview in parts, with the final two airing today and tomorrow at 6:00 and 9:00 p.m. EST.

I haven't personally been able to listen to the radio broadcast yet because the stream is overloaded. Here's the link, keep checkin it as it may work soon.

Pushead = Sweet artwork

The official site have confirmed that a DVD will be packaged with St. Anger! No official word yet as to what's included in the DVD but according to Nic the webmaster he's working on the news story that will be up tonight at some point.

Maybe it's just me, but don't you think if he's going to create a news story about this that he'd include the official tracklisting of the CD itself? I hope so.

I doubt they'll use some of those titles......they sound kinda half done ,aka half assed. I guess thats why they called them working titles, heh.

well..........cant say theyve gone back to their kill em all ways..........theres some shades of nu metal on the album..........but its way better than load/reload......
theres some cool harmonies on guitars.......the best thing is that songs start with cool melodic pluckings........bass is slightly over-used as in bass solos etc...

You can hear that they aren't Metallica by fucking listening to them. Use your brains, I listened to one and it was Meshugga, the others were wannabe Metallica bands.

Idiots.

When all the dust has cleared, when all is said and done, St. Anger will prove to be a rude awakening for everyone out there who decided to ditch Metaliica when they tried to do what they wanted. They are the ultimate posers. I'm willing to bet that damn near everyone who bitched and moaned about Metallica's experimental shit followed Metallica like the sheep they've proved thamselves to be, only to abandon them when some other band or critic says they should. Metallica invented the standard for a metal album with Ride The Lightning, then shot that to shit with Master of Puppets, SO AT LEAST GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE. When June 10th, rolls around, you had better fuckin believe that I'll be dragging my sorry fat ass to the first record store that opens to buy St. Anger. Come on, it's Metallica.

Other bands that have reclaimed their old glory even after experimental periods:

Napalm Death
Testament
Kreator
Iron Maiden
Black Sabbath
Voivod
Anthrax
Motorhead
Entombed
Slayer
METALLICA WILL

Are you really gonna deny all of that a listen to?

Nice post man, and you don't post very much either.

I will be there before the record store opens on June 10th, as I always am for any Metallica record. There have been ups and downs, but that of course, is going to happen. I think the problem is people have heard so much bullshit about Metallica and decided based upon what everyone else says. It's tough to find an individual in the "metal" world who thinks for his or herself, most of them are about as braindead as my great grandmother on life support right now.

I can guarantee you one thing though. The majority of the hardcore Metallica-faction of the metalworld will remain unchanged even after St. Anger is released. Most people are just that stupid, and ignorant and are just happy with the thousands of identical black and death metal bands out there.

St. Anger will kick ass.

Metallica rule.

Don't know if anyone has seen this but here's a press review for some songs..

Close-up's Martin Carlsson leaves an exclusive report from the studio north of San Francisco where Metallica's working on their new album "St. Anger".

I swear on the bible, on my mother's grave or whatever - the following text is nothing less than the complete truth. This statement needs to be made, quite simply because you're probably not going to believe me. I almost wonder if I've really listened to the new Metallica album "St Anger" myself, or if somebody has been playing a trick on me and played me some new, exciting aggro-band. You see, "St. Anger" is a chock, one of music history's greatest! It is as if "Load" and "Reload" has been deleted from the map, as if the Black Album never existed, as if the Metallica we've come to know never really existed. The five songs (all of which are as of yet untitled but the title-track) I've heard exhibits a sound so EXTREME and raw that all you can do is sit there chocked with your jaw on the floor.

I'm not joking.

Twenty journalists are gathered in the control-room of the studio north of San Francisco. We get comfortable. The air is vibrating with excitement, and then? BAM!! The first song (working title: Frantic) kicks in with hypnotic, almost industrial Slayer-riffs. What the fuck is going on? "You live it or lie it", chants James Hetfield and goes on with "my lifestyle determines my death style". It is ultra-tight metalcore like it has never been performed before. Lars ulrich's fat drum-sound is replaced with an oilrig-similar snare that's usually reminiscent of robotic industry-metal. "Do I have the strength?", a wondering Hetfield screams in the middle of the chaos. It is a maddening Blitzkriegstrategy with attack-waves of battering riffs, attacking from every angle for five minutes and 54 seconds.

I'm not joking.

The war as just begun, and I really mean THE WAR, because this music would be the perfect soundtrack to the media coverage of the war on Iraq. The title-track blazes away with a ultra-fast bulldozermosh that leaves Max Cavalera far behind. We are talking monster-metallized punk from another planet; a twisted and overdosed Dischange just released from rehab! We are talking beyond sound-speed, especially regarding the drum-work. The double-bass pounds away mercilessly and Lars Ulrich's use of the snare are almost -get this!- blast-beats!! It's going to be interesting seeing him trying to repeat this live - if the dane is usually soaked from sweat and carried to the lodge after traditional concerts, then he's going to need an oxygen-mask and hospital personnel to wake him back to life after this. Following this amazing intro comes a softer part where Hetfield sings "St. Anger around my neck, he never gets respect." This ten second long part, recurring a couple of times in the seven minute and 24 second long song, is the only part that could be classified as soft. The Producer Bob Rock (also on bass) assures me that this is the calmest, most stripped-down part on the whole album. WOW! A riff similar to "Creeping Death" follows. Hetfield howls "Fuck it all and fucking no regrets" (an exact recapitulation of the classic in "Damage Inc." ). Towards the end of the song he screams "I need to set my anger free"... and this is exactly what he and Metallica does: releasing all their anger.

I'm not joking.

Song number three starts up like an updated "Ride the Lightning": MEga-fat thrash-metal in midtempo speed. The vocalist spits: "It and you can look out motherfuckers, here I come!". Sepultura's "Roots"-era sound reminiscent in this song, with the refrain "It world" repeated again and again. Before the song ends at five minutes and 51 seconds, Hetfield shouts "enough, enough, enough"

I'm not joking.

Have you missed the complex song-structures of "And Justice for All"? Compared to this around eight minutes long piece (working title "Monster" ), the songs of the 1988 album seem more like simple Ramones' ditties. A progressive blanket of sound that warms like a massive and super-intricate Tool, only a thousand times heavier! Hetfield chants over a delicious part that goes into what could be called a chorus with some use of fantasy: "We the people, are we the people?". This phrase is repeated two times and "some kind of monster" three times before the singer concludes "this monster lives". There is actually something here that could be called groove, not entirely unlike Pantera although vastly heavier. The guitars are so damned insane, so damned evil, so damned incredible! The fact is that there isn't anything remotely like a traditional guitar-solo in any of these five songs. Hetfield and Kirk Hammett use their instruments like surgical tools. The guitars shrieks and scream as if Tom Morello and Kerry King made a deal and decided to take the Devil's music not one but ten steps further.

I'm not joking.

The most wicked part is however the last, whose working-name is "All Within My Hands". A very strange piece with an instrumental intro of one minute and fifteen seconds. The tempo is ultra-fast, taking so many twists and turns that you get all dizzy. "All Within My Hands" is shouted and then sung in an Alice In Chains manner. And the ending? MAN OH MAN! Like a possessed madman Hetfield screams "Kill kill kill kill!!" ad absurdum - we're talking deranged shrieks coming from a psychopathic Tom Araya (think Slayer's "Kill Again" only even more insane). You'd think it was over after that. But no. It is like watching an exciting thriller with so many surprises that you finally don't believe an ending is forthcoming. Yes, after a heavy-as-lead finale it winds down at eight minutes and 55 seconds.

I'm not joking.

20 Journalists finally leave the control-room and look at each other. No one needs say anything; the looks say it all: What in god's name have we just experienced? That Metallica, once tired old farts, have made a complete 180, and now sound like a bunch of hormone-reeking bucks in heat, is the most incredible thing that's happened in music history. "St. Anger" is the real "Reload". "St. Anger" doesn't sound like anything the group has done before, it hardly even sounds like Metallica. "St. Anger" is a modern, super-brutal metal-album that is going to chock and knock the entire music world. Melodies? Nope, there's not much here that reminds one of traditional melodies or arrangements such as verse, bridge, chorus. The 10th of June could become known as the day that shook the world. If you haven't catched on yet:

I'm not joking.

Shame on me for not posting that, I saw it when I woke up this morning. It's an exciting read that's for sure. Thanks for makin up for my fuck up, Clad.

Aside from all the hype, I already had a pre-installed hype, as I do anytime Metallica releases something. It's strange, I feel like a teenager again.

Although it's a cool read, take that review with a grain of salt guys. It's not the entire album, and it wasn't a final mix.

The man who wrote that article posted this message on the Jump in the Studio board today, as a bit of clarification.

Posted: 02 Apr 2003 19:59 Post subject: Clarification of my review of 5 songs from "St. Anger&q

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, so my report on www.closeupmagazine.net made some serious headways on this and many other boards. I just want to clarify a few things. First off, there are different translations (none done by me) of the original Swedish report and none of them are 100 % accurate. I didn't swear on my mother's grave (she's still alive, thank you very much) but on my grandmother's.
The sound on Lars's snare drums does NOT sound like he's hitting on an oil rigg (as one translation statet) but on an oil barrell. Just a couple of examples.
As regards to the lack of guitar solos - there ARE solos, they just don't sound the way you'd perhaps expect. Metallica have clearly reinvented themselves on this album, that's obvious from hearing these 5 songs.
Anyone who claims they have downloaded this material is full of BS. Journalists were kept to a minimum in the control room for the listening session (i.e - photographers and camera men were not allowed to join us because of the small size of the room) and we were only allowed to bring a pen and note pad and wear nothing but pants and a shirt (no jackets etc).
Additionally, the snippets that have leaked out in the past, real or not, will not appear on "St. Anger" since the album consists of songs written from September last year and onwards plus a few totally reworked ideas.
I'm in the process of putting together a super extensive report on Metallica which will appear in the June issue of Close-Up in Sweden (street date June 10th). With the exception of So What, it'll most likely the most most extensive story of the band in aeons.

well i think metallica are a greatly talented band, and if the rumours ive heard about their new album is true id think it'll make a great impact on the scene, maybe not so that people would quite see wat its done, but in the future (if the rumours are true) then bands in my opinion would want to live up to such a great album. look at the black album and what that did to the industry. still selling thousands of copies today.

Talented musicians desearve a spliff on me!!!

Today is Metallica's last day in the studio. According to the studio site, we're expecting some nice "going away" surprises, possibly a jamming video/new song clip/who knows. We'll have to wait until 3:00 pm Pacific time to find out.

There is a new video up though of Lars doing an interview in which he has said that one earlier reporter commented on the album being "commercial suicide". Funny shit. The rawness/heaviness/speed factors were also repeated, and might I add he was very sincere about the whole thing.

I'll update here with developments.

No word yet as to what else will be up tonight.

from the studio site this afternoon

In The Studio (04/07/2003 12:58:00 PM)
When I walked in to HQ this morning I expected to see & hear nothing. SURPRISE!!!
I see James on the couch watching TV, and a few minutes later in rolls Lars, Kirk and Rob. What the hell? Lars explains that they have been in this weekend going through the DVD footage they shot Friday, plus going over some mixes. I guess I missed out, or maybe they did not want JITS there? Or maybe I was too tired after Friday - the last of JITS? Anyway, time to step up from the Grave and come back to life, at least for a few days.

Today we have MTV here to shoot some stuff preparing for the mtvICON show coming up. Then after that the band will work on getting ready for mastering.

On another VERY happy side note the band has invited JITS to join them for the mastering process! Your regular ITS reporter will not be joining them, as I will go on a very well deserved (right???) vacation - Surfing in Kaui, Hawaii ALOHA FUCKERS! Therefore I would like to introduce to you our ITS INTERN that will be updating you guys during the mastering of St. Anger. How did I find the ITS INTERN you ask? Well, after the HQ end of album party I went out to a local bar. This dude comes up to me and says 'Hey man, if I buy you a beer can I work for JITS?'. I thought that I would never see the guy again, so I said 'Sure'. Then today he called me and reminded me, so I guess we had to hire him.

Laters...ITS

All the information you've been asking for over the past page or so has already been in this thread. It's completely up to date, all the time. Yes it's June, June 10th. Read through the thread sometime.

This is the first time since ...And Justice For All that Met have had a title track. And in the tradition of all Metallica title tracks, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, ...And Justice For All, St. Anger is track number 2.

I'm fuckin' pumped.

I watched the video called "The Four Horsemen" from the
web page, and they wre playing Battery, it was all good until
James started singing, they should get Jason back and make
him growl to the entire song...Then maybe, metallica would
sound more metal....

I wonder how cool it would be to have Metallica as
a Death Metal band

James was horse on almost all the studio vids due to constantly laying down vocal tracks, and if you've seen more than one video you'd know that he'd been screaming and singing his ass off.

I'll ignore your other retarded comment. Go pollute other threads.

Ok, there's not really much to report about the album anymore until it comes out. I'm closing this thread until June 10th, or in the event some cool news breaks I'll re-open it.
