Vai is in the shred-wankery genre. I guess it could also be called guitar-based rock music. Calling Bodom either power metal or black metal seems wrong. I think melodic metal works the best.

I think Vai is kind of in his own little category. I mean, Satch is an improv machine, but Vai's stuff is extremely out there in some cases. Anyways, I like Satch better, but Vai's stuff is just so eccentric you gotta love it.
