It's only an issue if it's a terrible screw up.
For instance: Calling Cryptopsy grindcore....no no no.
On the other hand calling a brutal death metal band "just death metal" should be tolerated.

Calling Cryptopsy grindcore, while misguided, is because they grind and are one of the many, many bands to combine death and grindcore, though they're fairly firmly in the death camp. Which does not sound like much of a happy camp. On the other side are bands like Cephalic Carnage.
This genre shit is always amusing. Nobody has a clear idea of them that seems to be generally held. Except me, because I rule. Just watch as I paint inside the lines, avoiding most hybrid bands:

Hmm, actually, virtually all of those bands are hybrids. What does this teach us? The best bands tend not to paint inside the lines, so don't worry your internet heads about those lines. Generic bands are genre-confined, and while genres are useful for thinking about categorization, you'll find that professional thinkers spend a lot of time arguing about them and noticing their constructedness (they're always created by listeners and not by makers), frangibility, and somewhat subjective arbitrariness. So no flaming over genre confusion, okay?

How about your calling Motley Crue power metal?
It's funny to see some people listing Wormphlegm as their favorite doom metal band. That's thanks to me. They really do border on black metal though, there isn't much doom about them (save the slow pace, duh). |
