Before you have a flame at me, consider the facts which you already know and were about to own me with. Physics has had major thought systems pop up, which explain so much in the universe. Relativity clashes with Newtonian physics but the two are both extremely important in their suitable situations and work with each other way. Chemistry, Cosmology, etc... all massive contributions. Biology is trailing. Granted, the past 25 or so years have seen much advance but this is mainly due to technological advance. I think, stem cells will be biology's way of catching up to the other sciences (but don't quote me on this ).

yea the hubble kicks ass! its taken some amazing photos.

this will be the second time i've watched these leonids. last time they were most visible much later at night at we had to drive out to the beach at 2 or 3 in the morning. we dug out little recliner shaped holes in the sand and passed a bottled of some generic coke with a bunch of rum in it. then just watched the most meteors i've ever seen in my life. on good ones, you can see a lot of different colors in the tails.

Sounds awesome. Too bad i've got a bunch of mates who think astronomy is gay, and never go with me. Do you live in a populated area with lots of light pollution? Lucky if you dont. When I go out to the country I see so much shit im missing out on at home. Hardly ever see meteors, of any type.

well my roommates are pretty cool with the whole thing. i brought our old family telescope back with me one time since my parents never use it. i've found and shown my roommates saturn, jupiter, mars, and venus. the telescope isn' that great and saturn and jupiter are just about dots...but you can see the rings around saturn, and the banded clouds of jupiter.

we have a decent amount of light from the city. our block r eally doesn't have much light so its kinda nice with the telescope..but for the showers, we went to the beach and we'll probably do the same tomorrow

i'll bring my camera for sure..but none of the pictures will turn out focused.

with such a low light situation, i'm hoping to click the button and capture a nice time lapse of stars moving in our skies. should just look like curved lines.

edit...i'm just kinda drunk. that is what i'd do if there wasn't a meteor shower. i'll try to photograph that...but if i manage to get some meteors in frame, the "background" stars should still do what i mentioned.

In a astronomy mag I picked up the other day (which I read a day too late) said that the Leonids would have been visible from 2am to light over here. Well, at 1.30am that night I could barely open my eyes to look through the lens so I wouldve missed out anyway.

It says the Geminids (another meteor shower) are coming December 13th? You get them there?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure most of America gets Geminids (and also on the 14th). Should be a good one since it gets larger every year. I'm heading out to Utah for Christmas break and hope to schedule the trip to include those dates. That would rule.

nah i missed it. we went to our neighbors keg party and 11:45 rolled around..nothing. then a friend called me and said it wasn't supposed to be till 2 or 3...well i ended up drinking a bunch and not making it till that late...not really sure i remember leaving the party woke up the next day with all my clothes on except my shoes and socks. later someone said the best time to see them is in august..so who knows. i guess i'll just have to make up for it and take out the telescope sometime.

with the scope i have, we've seen jupiter, saturn, venus, plenty of stars, a nebula or two, and of course the moon. honestly don't remember finding mars or mercury. oh yea..and they all pretty much look tiny as hell. could only tell it was jupter cause you can see some moons all lined up and can see the banded clouds...and saturn we could recognize because of the rings. but it was no bigger than one of these damn smiley faces.

edit...don't know about those geminids..i'll have to look into it.

Sleep and Depression/Sucidalness

I think this is an interesting article. More importantly and interesting to think about thing. Its a yahoo article talking about a correlation between nightmare occurances and suicidality.

Coming from a person who almost consistently battles "nightmares" and "depression" at times this article is intresting.

Although this article goes on about sleep problems and what not and to me i definately don't see sleep problems with myself as I LOVE to fucking sleep ahha. I command myself to get like 9 hours of sleep a day and will generally put off importantt hings to make sure that happens. It appears they are considering nightmares as sleep problems, and i'm not sure how/why they would suggest that.

i would say thats because many people that suffer from chronic nightmares have trouble getting the overall amount of sleep needed. sometimes they wake up during a bad dream and i'm sure some people dread sleeping in fear of nightmares which makes it hard for them to even relax enough to go to sleep in the first place.

another reason is that i assume if a dream is causing you a lot of stress while you are asleep, you aren't getting quite as good of a sleep as you would if you were totally relaxed or having a good dream.

i myself don't have a problem with nightmares really..i've had a few and i've woken up from a few of them, but my main problem is just going to sleep. i lay down and toss and turn for a while normally...it varies. i usually don't remember my dreams though..and sometimes when i do, i can't remember everything..just parts and vague ideas of others.

I almost never have a problem getting to sleep ever. Sometimes during forcible sleeping it might take me awhile (purposely changing schedules and going to bed early). Also lots of anxiety for the next day too can make me spend an additional hour awake. But thats about the fullest it takes.

Like i've said many of times my dreams as i would see them is common thoughts manifested into dreams. And sometimes i probably do slightly fear what could arise in my dreams especially if the night before was something that i just really didn't want to "relive" or create a reality of.

spiders, arachnids and maybe even arthropods in general, can regenerate limbs and other parts of their bodies. in a fight, or if caught on something, a spider can easily tear its body away from the trapped limb and the wound will close up. a new leg will begin to develop inside the spider as its next exoskeleton begins to develop inside its current one.

here is a pic of my Xenesthis sp. "white" after the molt before last. the reason it is called "Xenesthis sp. "white"" instead of Xenesthis (then species name) is because it has yet to be scientifically described. its a pretty rare species that has yet to be studied enough to distinguish what makes it a separate species from other spiders in its genus. so i guess it could be the same species as other Xenesthis spiders, just a color variant rather than a valid separate species.

the temporary name of the species "white" comes from the fact that unlike X. immanis (the spider that looks most like it), this species has the pinkish legs as a juvenile, and has a frosted appearance to its black legs as an adult instead of the solid black legs of X. immanis. but like i said..there is a chance its not a separate species because there are occasionally geographic and color variations within a single species.

Random cool science fact: Over 400 people have been in space. Only 2 have been to the very bottom of the Ocean (deepest part). At these extreme, extreme pressures (so extreme that if a crack occurred in the glass and some water came through, it would come in at a speed which would cleanly slice through the occupants' bodies.), bio-luminescent animals were fairly common. A fish was seen on the very bottom.

I wish i could see india in like 10 million years. You think everst is tall now? In X amount of million years india will no longer exist as anything but a GIANT fucking mountain range. The plate that India sits on is going under neith the Eurasian plate called subduction. Since the crust is so "light, and not so dense" it doesn't go down with the plate its on so it just gets kinda smushed together with other continental crust.

No thats most definately the bottom of the ocean, ocean trench, whatever you want to call it. 10,900 meters is the bottom of the ocean. Equates to about 35,000 feet.

There was a great series of Discovery channel a pretty long time ago covering different aspects of the ocean, and one episode in particular delt with the Abyssal plain and other underwater alien worlds. It made me want to be an oceanographer when I was younger but now I think the ocean should be studying me.

sounds almost like a david attenburough (might've spelled his last name wrong) video. he has compiled quite a few amazing nature documentaries. a quick google will show you all the movies hes been involved in..very famous..and for good reason. there is some amazing footage in all of his documentaries. check them out. one thing i've mentioned here on the mt boards was footage of the largest species of centipede catching a bad in mid flight..thats part of one of his videos. Scolopendra gigantea is the species..it climbs up onto the ceiling of a cave and hangs half of its body down since it can sense vibrations from the bats. it nails one and sine it has powerful venom, it easily subdues the bat. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgLmUb5P_Ws ha i know i've posted this here before..but its fucking sick!

Broadcast 19 September 2001, the next programme explores the unknown depths of the ocean. Over 60% of the sea is more than a mile deep and it forms the planet's most mysterious habitat. A sperm whale descends 1,000 metres to look for food and is followed. On the way down, a number of unusual creatures are witnessed, such as transparent squid and jellies, whose photophores give pulsating displays of colour. In such dark places, both being able to see (or sense movement) and the means of quick concealment are equally desirable. To that end, some use bioluminescence as a means of detecting food or evading predators. A descent to the very bottom of the ocean — some 4,000 metres — reveals life even at such cold temperatures, much of it new to science. It is dominated by echinoderms that sweep the sea bed; however, there are occasional large hunters, such as chimaera. In addition, six-gilled sharks can grow up to eight metres in length and have remained unchanged for 150 million years. They are described as "living fossils" and relatively little is known about them. As the continental slope flattens out it joins the abyssal plain, which can form huge trenches. At seven miles, the deepest is the Mariana trench, and fish have been found there right down to the very bottom. Attenborough remarks that more is known about the surface of the moon. cool...that guys docs are fucking amazing! i recommend them all..even the ones i haven't seen (most of them) i've seen the ocean one in its entirety, and the "life in the undergrowth" which is about bugs pretty much. it shows a lot of various insects as well as spiders and other arachnids and some myriapods (centipedes/millipedes) like i said...incredible footage all around. a lot of the things in his videos i've never seen anywhere else. hell they spend almost a decade filming each one i think. they better have some damn good footage hehe. but seriously...all of his works are worth a rent/watch.

Yeah i've been learnign about sea floor spreading for like a week in 2 different classes. Its intresting to hear how the whole plate tectonics thing works. (in greater detail than i did in high school)

My geo class definately rock. I'm glad i've decided to change my major and this semester was gonna suck, but now completely rocks.
