Song Writing Basics

So I'm finally starting to write some songs, but I have a few questions about it.

I'm having trouble writing rhythm and lead parts that blend together. Either I have a wicked lead and can't fit a rhythm to it, or vice versa. Is there some secret to this? Do they have to be in the same key? If so, is the key just the first note of the riff (just getting into that stuff)?

Also, to find chords, do you just use the 1st 3rd and 5th notes of a scale in conjunction with each other? I thought I had heard that stated earlier.

Many thanks.

A good trick I use all the time to use to get leads and rhythms coherce is the use of inversions.

Just loop the rhythm and jam over it until you come up with some ideas you'd like to use then just Touch them up to make them perfect.

it's quite easy, just look good at your lead....

do you play it like 2/4 , 3/4 or 4/4 for example

then break your lead riff in two, three or 4 pieces...

pick the first note and look at what place on the board/fret it is and make a power-chord of it...

Then with your own fantasy you can use/create more chords to even get a better riff...

simple as that

Play with another guitarist. How do you think bands write songs? You can't start a solo band overnight, just jam out with someone.

Oh, and listen to everything TruthDevoid says. He knows what's up.

Yes, you're right. There is a secret to writing perfect harmonic melodies. That's why only a couple of people can do it--and it nicly keeps the crappy players out of the loop. Also, the good composers out there started very good; they were never novice. In fact, one day when they're 1 and 1/2 years old, it's almost required that they write 6 four minute songs with congegated vowels of the third district of Columbia.

P.S.
Sarcasm

There is no secret to writing. Everyone starts novice. Work at it, and don't let me get your hopes down.

I helped him over AIM. I told him to learn everything about theory and then forget about it. Really, if you focus too much on theory it kills your creativity, or at least for me it does.

Definately not me. Post-tonal theory is my best friend for creativity--especially for the band I'm in. We play old school thrash with major deathmetal influence, so our songs are very note friendly.
