Tape Under Cymbals?

What exactly does putting tape under your cymbals help, i always see it in videos, is it just so they dont ring as long?

Yeah tape on cymbals helps controll the decay of a cymbal. It will make it crash a bit smoother.

I hate this idea when it comes to cymbals. I take pride in what cymbal I buy so I know exactly how it's going to sound...that's why I bought it. Cymbals are made to be loud, they're supposed to ring and sustain and all that good stuff blah blah blah halb halb halb.

Unless they're made to not be loud and ring.

I would only do this for recording purposes, if at all. I agree, take pride in your cymbal purchase, it is a very thought out and time consuming experience. Plus the more natural the better. Everyone has their own idea's about what sounds good though.

personally, there is no reason for it what so ever. (unless your short on cash that is) when you buy a cymbal you should know what kind of sound you are getting. you dont want a 20" heavy crash if you want a disapating sound...you get a 16" light/medium crash...the moral of the story is...well nothing

There is a reason for it. Maybe you want a cymbal but it rings a tiny bit more than you'd like. And you can't find a cymbal to find your needs. Then tape would be your best friend.

True, but there's nothing wrong with relying on tape either. It's like a dollar a roll. I've never tried tape on cymbals, but it works fairly well on toms and ever snares.

Try Evans G2s. Nice, sturdy, 2-ply heads with solid tone and not too much ring.

And don't tape your drum heads. :P
