Why is this such a classic? I'm a pretty big BM fan and I picked this up in August and I'm pretty sure it's the 4th worst record I heard. Was it groundbreaking or something? To me it's just slow and boring!

I agree with what Hellblaster said, it was some quite new and uniqe when it first came out. Darkthrone had cast aside their death metal roots (ever heard their stuff when they were called Black Death, the Darkthrone demos, or even just "Soulside Journey"?) and gone into blacker realms with this album. A lot of bands did they same around that time, trying to talk the talk when it came to writing music that was more fitting for the term "death" since death metal just wasn't cutting it anymore. Put yourself back in 1991, and compare the album to other bands at that time.

It's my belief that this album is a classic because it has such a cool name, one which may easily be paraphrased in or used as a subtitle for any number of articles regarding black metal. Whether or not the music is worthwhile is almost irrelevant with such an iconic name.

It's a good album in alot of opinions and not in others what else needs to be said?

You want me to clarify on how I think they're one of the worst black metal bands EVER? It was an opinion, General Kvltmaster - obviously it'll differ from your point-of-view.

Generally the attitude I've seen towards this band, or something like Burzum, is this: like it, or you're not black metal. It is kind of like, liking Possessed if you're into death metal - simply because they were influential in said genre. It isn't metal to hate Possessed. Hence the kvlt-kiddie phrase.

First off, reread my post and you'll see that I said nothing regarding my personal feelings towards Darkthrone, or Burzum for that matter. I was simply asking you to expound upon why you feel that way. Yes, in the beginning Darkthrone were pretty good, especially since there wasn't such an oversaturation of the genre at the time. Since then, there have been an infinite number of copycats, love them or hate them, but there have also been a number of original and unique bands. Blut Aus Nord, Leviathan/Lurker of Chalice, Xasthur and some more are my personal favorites and I understand that some may not like them. That's cool, that's their personal preference. To me, it has nothing to do with, as you said, "like it, or you're not black metal". I'm sure you've met your fair share of morons who act like this, and therefore give the rest of us a bad image, but don't think that we're all the same. And I understand also what you mean about Possessed, considering I never really cared for them either. Again, I was not attacking you, though I may have been a little too blunt, just simply trying to understand another person's opinion.
