Fretless Question

I just received a fretless bass and it comes with factory strung flatwound strings. Are these necessary to avoid any form of damage or are roundwounds good. (I just hate the feel of flatwounds.....they feel like plastic)

I've heard some people talk about how they've used roundwounds on their fretless and recieved no damage, so I'm not sure. Your best bet if you want to use round is to get the neck epoxied.

Flatwounds are pretty much made for fretless bass, the steel roundwounds are the ones that will harm your fretless IF heavily slapped or plucked, but flatwounds are guaranteed to be nice to your fretless..

I would do what McCalister999 said, get it epoxied or don't use roundwound. If you look at the fretboard of most fretted basses you can see where the string has dug into the wood in between frets. Now if there arent frets there to keep the string away from the wood .... well you'll get tons of marking on the neck. Especially if you bend and vibrato alot.

I say do away with it. You can always stand in its former location if you need to make use of the perspective it gave you, but will benefit from the ability to situate yourself in different loci with ease.
Destroy the box.

Ahh, but there is a special vibrato for fretless playing, celloists do it a lot, vibrate there hand into the finger, Jaco does it a lot, it hard to explain, but there is a way around it, but i also do see a point in your post, get its epoxyed so it looks lush like this..
