In a nutshell, Vardanstalt is right: Satanism has nothing to do with worshipping Lucifer/Hades/Beelzebub/Satan or whatever you wish to call it, the scary image everyone has of a "Satanist" was created by the Church and European monarchies to scare their subjects into believing, going to church and paying their taxes.
Real Satanism is completely symbolic, it's all about detaching from society and finding peace in self-assertion. Some people just do it in a symbolic way, which I think is more down-to-Earth, others take it differently and do some magick/witchery stuff but w/e. Others are just frustrated Christians that want to scare/annoy people.
Whatever belief makes you happy -be it a religion or a lack of- is good for you.
