it sounds to me like on some albums (maybe all, just better hidden on some) that abbath uses some kind of vocal processor to layer and sound so croaky

I don't listen to Immortal that much, something about them I couldn't put my finger on. And the Call of the Wintermoon video didn't help much.
And for some reason I've only heard 1 Emperor song and that was about 3 years ago so I don't remember what it sounded like. I know I liked it.

Sure it could. Both the guitar tone and vocals on that album dissapointed me. I mean, he has a great clean voice, and a pretty good growl, but he's not the end all be all of vocalists.
