It took a month of thinking up how to do it and then making the ideal work. I don't think I will ever do it again without first being able to removing the fretboard. The total cost for the side markers was near $20 but lots of frustration.

Whoa very nice, I just don't like the finish. So how much did you spend in building your guitar total? I want to try this someday.

Very nice job on the guitar, glad you chose a different shape and finish to make your instrument even more unique(I actually like to see natural wood staining) and didn't just go with a standard shape or paint/graphics that every Joe and his cousin has.
Like also the work done on the 7-string Soulie, how bad a shape was it in when you got it? Do you have before photos?.
I've been toying with the idea of taking a crappy guitar and doing it up for some time, this has given me much food for thought

Lets just say it had rust all over the bridge, strings, frets, pups, and tuners. I think some KoRn fan might have used it as a boat ore, played it in a rain storm, or went swimming with it Amazingly the neck wasn't warped so I could save it. The neck and headstock had chips everywhere but the body finish was surprisingly unmarked. I just filed and sanded out the neck, fretboard, and headstock and refinished it.

I'm thinking of building an RG 550 by hand. I can get all of the pieces on Ebay.
And just to thank you, Ian. This project of yours has inspired me to give it a go, and possibly making a career out of being a luthier or a guitar-repair guy. You know, the techie asshole guys who act like you should be able to fix it yourself *coughBLScough*

Alright, well, when I was at work last night, I came up with a list of things I need. Tell me what needs to be added, if anything:
body
neck
tuners
plates
knobs
electronics/jack
bridge
locking nut (floyd rose)
pickups
pickup rings
I'm probably missing a few things. I was just trying to get a preliminary list of things. I'm not going to buy it now, or within the next few months. Its just a project for "when I get to it."

strap buttons, but the body you buy may already have that.
The springs, and spring anchors, but, the bridge you buy may include all that.
I know BLS did this already with an ibanez 7 string.

Yeah, they do have them. But I'll make sure just in case. And I'll put strap locks as standard (don't think that the holes are drilled). I'm holding out for a GREAT body to come up for sale.

come to think about it, "Ian" would be a pretty cool name for a guitar company... I think it would look pretty cool on a headstock

Ok, lets not turn this into another Ran discussion, so I'll say it again:
Get off Ran's nuts.
