I've only heard one time through, so I'm going to reserve judgement for now but I will say the album is not bad. So far it's about average, nothing special. I know Opethfan will have my head for even thinking about actually listening to this and not proclaiming the greatest thing ever before ever letting it sink in, but that's the way you should do these things.
A few observations though
The production is very, very slick. Too slick in fact, it's processed like a motherfucker.
Akerfeldt's singing is pretty good, and really feminine in parts. His growl is as always, excellent.
The drums sound really great in places and also bland as shit in others, inconsistent.
|
Is Steve Wilson still doing producing? Because honestly, the production on this sounds exactly like Porcupine Tree's "Deadwing."
Mike can sing his ass off. Mike can still growl his ass off. And I thought he was losing it...
and didn't someone else do the drums? Martin is still really sick, isn't he???
btw: definately not the "greatest album ever." Very close for Opeth's greatest album, but IMO Blackwater Park is still their greatest. Don't follow my lead and don't start that "best album" shit again.

1) Nope, Steve Wilson didn't produce it
2) Yes Mike sounds great
3) Someone else didn't do drums, Martin did
4) I think Blackwater Park is their weakest album

I'm on a computer with cable and I'm in the process of finding some of the songs. I got Isolation Years, not sure about it yet.

That song is sort of like the emotional release of the album (final song)

I'm listening to it right now, damn it's sounds really really good. So and sorry it that long, Dissection (Bill is it?), I guess it was my connection or something. Usually it doesn't take me and Tranny long at all to trade.

I dont know the name of the song but track 4 is like a hippy song (but it still sounds fucking great) and I love Isolation Years. The album in genreal turned out really really well. There are only some slight parts that i disagree with and some parts where the keyboards just ruined it.

Well, that was surprisingly mediocre, and also forgettable. Opeth's long songs don't usually have me checking to see what track I'm on. That 'The Grand Conjuration' sounds more like Dream Theater with each listen doesn't really help, I guess. I wouldn't call it a bad album, as there are some good parts, but I'd want something more out of an 'experiment' and I definitely expect a greater level of consistency from Opeth. I guess that's what I get for expecting.
Does anyone else hear 'This site it's a shit' in a hard, stereotypical dago accent? Like Super Mario or the greaseball pizza man on the Simpsons. That rules.

I will agree in the experimental sense. I believe that they have 4 directions in which to travel. Either go back to one of their earilier days(Orchid/Morningrise or Still Life/BWP style), continue on this route of half liked/half disliked by fans, go to something completely different or unexpected, or just disband...which would suck...major ass.

Cmon guys, please please save all these reviews until its out for sale. I know I could easily just Not look at this thread but its too much of a cocktease already just by not looking for the album on the Internetz.
Its like waiting 3 years for a sequel to your favorite movie to come out, then have some dudes who've seen it a month before its out tell you "Its okay, but I've seen better." to you.

Listened to it once all the way through, and I'm just glad to have new Opeth to listen to. So far it's good, but it'll probably grow on me with time. Perhaps not their best album, though (would've liked some more ballbustingly heavy parts).
Love Ghost of Perdition though.
And yes, Nevermore's This Godless Endeavor may be more worthy of the "Greatest Album Ever" title.
