A tip I got from someone who matters

Learn how to breath properly. This pertains to everday breathing and not just while you are vocalizing. Keep your mouth closed and teeth together. Now breath in through your nose and try to get in tune with the fact that your belly should inflate somewhat. This is why images of Budah(sp?) always portray him with a large belly. It isn't because he was full of fecal matter and could not defecate, it was because he had so much chi and that his breathing was so perfect.

Chi Gong breathing techniques will help so much. Maybe not with direct vocalization and tone but your lung capacity will be much greater and your natural vocal tone will be able to withstand so much more abuse while churning out harsh chortles and gutteral vocals.

I hope this helps all who read it.

My gong techniques help a lot too, to suffocate women that is. :P

Breathing is obviously an important part of singing, but you didn't really describe anything?

Hmm...I'd say most fat dudes (and especially morbidly obese dudes) would have some major breathing problems.
And the way to exercise this breathing thing is...breathe through your nose? Oh, wait. "breathe through your nose with your mouth closed and teeth together." Whew, almost missed that part. See, I'm a geek. I always keep my mouth open...yet breathe through my nose. And when I breathe in, my belly should inflate? Hmmm...my belly has always deflated and made that farting sound when I breathe in. Thanks, that must be what I'm doing wrong.

Seriously, though, this thread is just another repeated technique with Buddah thrown in the mix. Oh well, we needed some more threads in the vocal forum anyway. Thanks for the contribution. And don't forget to breathe. It helps your vocal performance.

With all the threads here, I'm sure we've covered most everything that applies to vocals.
We already have two threads on breathing, and I know how to breathe. There's only one way these people breathe, and I've already mentioned it a few times. This applies mostly to singing, not to much growling.

Yeah, cause I headbang while I do, and I can't really "Jump" (haha ) like VanHalen in a dorm room, so I just walk back and forth....haha a couple days ago I was jumping up and down on my bed, with my pants down and my roommate came in when I wasn't looking, hahaha.

I tried out breathing, and guess what? I can't stop doing it! I have been incorporating it in my everyday life. Also I found that breathing while playing guitar helps to keep that dizziness at bay. Anyone else noticing that?

I also found out that swallowing while eating and drinking makes it all the more fullfilling.

We should post more amazing discoveries in this thread!

You guys are so mean.
Yes, breathing is important and there is the right way to do it for maximum output. I thought I was made in the shade til my asthma got the better of me. It took me about 6 months to a year to not just inflate my lungs singing and to do it from the nether regions (not my ass either) of my lower abs. It took another year beyond that to be able to sing more than short phrases.
I do prefer the Pearl Diver technique myself. It comes in handy for other things, too. I can sing the whole Oreo Cookie theme song now without taking a breath. My neighbor,her kid, his g/f, and I are going to enter the jingle contest for them. She's a highly trained vocalist and she can't even do that.

Oh yeah, and what Jitter bug is talking about is also the way you breathe in yoga, too. Your mouth closed and inhale through your nose. Although when I sing I tend to take it from both.
You can practice normal correct posture while you're doing it. Put your shoulders down, inhale deeply through your nose, and push the air out through your nose in short controlled exhilations. Don't do it more than a few times or you can get light-headed. Then take a few normal cleansing breaths which is just normal breathing. It'll wake you up and make you more aware of your body, too.

I'm an awesome singer because before each line I inhale continously until it's time for my next line. I try to fill my lungs as much as possible. It makes volume a joke. You just let a little bit out at a time, and your volume is nuts.

What the hell?

I am a fat ass, and I breath way better than a lot of skinny friends that I have. Shit son, I have powerfull lungs. Might be because I played a few wind instruments (trumpet, french horn, tuba) in band class before I switched to guitar. Whew, I find that insulting for some reason, and I ussually never get insulted from fat jokes or anything pertaining to ridiculing fat people. Cunt.
