Save up for a real guitar...

$400 will buy you expensive firewood.

Can anyone tell me the difference between the DXMG and the DX10D? I can't see it, and i'm thinking about getting the DX10D cause i'm gonna swap the pickups anyway, but if theres a good reason to get the DXMG, i'll get it

The ESP LTD KH is just about $400. The Jackson X series are all about $400-$450.

Used = guitars you couldn't afford now if they were new. I'm sure you could knock off $100 or even more off some high end ESP Ltd. stuff. Check their site. The MSRP price is way much more than what real stores sell it at, so knock off an additional $100 if you buy it used.

They used to be RRP$849 (US), now they've stopped production and the ones left are $199.

I'm going to be trying out the quilted maple veneer version sometime in the future.

I don't know about the first, but the KH-202 has low quality woods, a licenced floyd and passive EMG's. So no, it's not a decent guitar.

Harmony-central classifies always has people selling them for cheap.

I just saw one with a JB in the bridge and a Jazz in the neck go for $370.

If you're not a guitar snob you'll find that most metal guitars can be had for around $400 to $800, and that's a wide wide range.

Hell my schecter Omen 6 (my dad traded my PRS for booze money, and i needed a fucking guitar) which i bought on sort of a whim turned out to be a damn good guitar.

Hell my Jackson RX10D is f'ing sweet. No USA series, but damn good.

However if you need that USA-made/brand-name/I-payed-over-a-grand security, go ahead. I dont, and I'm more than satisfied with my choices of guitars.

Hell most $400 guitars can be modded a little into fucking beasts of guitars.

i'd go for an ibanez rg, even the cheaper ones are pretty good.
bought my rg2570 for 900€, that's bout $1170
i think if you'd buy a cheaper new one or an better used one won't matter that much
they all have a heavy tone and are simple to play

whoever says you cant get a good guitar for $400 is an idiot.
as def said, the old high range ibanez's go for cheap on ebay and their build quality and playabilty exceeds those of new type factory made guitars.

open your eyes snobs

You could check out the range of Cort guitars, I got myself an X-6 about a month ago, they are about $600 new but I traded in my epiphone and got it for $350. They have a cheaper model aswell but it is lacking a floyd rose. It might be good for a muck around guitar though. Check em out...

are sure about that? i was considering a *-50 Esp LTD (or *-100) with some nice seymour duncans instead of the stock pups. can anyone confirm that ? i know that stock pickups on cheap guitars suck but what about the craftmanship? they have decent reviews...

keep in mind the reviewers, since they're buying the cheapest guitars possible, are probably a bit inexperienced.

For one while i think the action on my Jackson RX10D is perfect, i know the floyd licensed tremelo is ASS. Maybe i'll buy a new bridge and put it in (original floyd or maybe even kahler...) Other than that, it needs new pickups. Since all my other guitars have SDs and Dimarzios in them, I'm gonna throw EMGs in this one to see how they work.

So you do need to do a bit of modding possibly, but in the end you'll still have spent less than an already kickass guitar. Unless of course you're not a fan of doing work to a guitar. I dont care really, cause i'm a cheap bastard. Fuck if i knew a lot about wiring I'd build my own damn cabs.

You'll still get shitty licenced floyds like the above poster mentioned, as well as cheap ass woods and the like. Plus, LTD's aren't known for their craftsmanship, maybe ESP's are, but not LTD's.

Fucking, alder and shit, same as high-end guitars. I'm not saying they're nice, but that's as friggin decent as you get for $400. I suppose a $1000 guitar for you is decent.

depends on the ltd....

it's the same thing you get between gibson and epiphone... not all epiphones suck. hell, give me a epi elite sg standard over a gibson sg special.

Not all alder is the same quality. There's multiple grades, and the cheap guitars would have the lower grades.

Solution?

Put active pickups into a guitar with lower grade woods (ltds, etc) and put SDs/Dimarzio's/whatever flavor you like into a guitar with high quality woods.

solution??? for what??

Btw that "statement" or conclusion or whatsoever you might call it.. it's bullshit..

active pickups picks up the tone from the guitar just like any pickup, but before it gets sent to the output jack of the guitar, it gets amplified so that the signal overdrives the amp... this is the whole idea with high output pickups

i expected YOU to say that

but seriously though.. emg's werent made for the single purpose of making cheap guitars sound good.

i'd stack emg's up against any duncans or dimarzios in a high end guitar. hell i made the conversion from dimarzios to emg's in my rg and i like it just fine....

No one said they were made to make shitty guitars sound good..

If you like that sound then great..

Look at Zakk he plays Les Pauls made of top notch wood and he sitll uses EMG's.. why?

I guess because he likes them

I didnt mean it like it was an end-all be-all conclusion.
It just makes more sense. Passives will sound better in a high quality(wood) guitar than in an low quality alder guitar. EMGs wont sound extremely different between the two. I own Duncans and EMGs, I liked the duncans in my Mahogany bodied guitar more than in my oldass warlock with crappy wood.

And I didnt say EMGs dont take any tone from woods, they do, but nowhere near as much as passives.

that's all subjective. one might like the sound of passives in an alder guitar more than a "higher quality wood".

and i'm sure you'd also like the emg's more in the mahogany guitar than in the warlock with "crappy wood".

either way.... it's all just your opinion.

Put active pickups into a guitar with lower grade woods (ltds, etc) and put SDs/Dimarzio's/whatever flavor you like into a guitar with high quality woods.

There's some sense in getting used guitars too... get to see how well they hold up under pressure. You have to be careful though.

Speaking of woods....what type of wood would an Ibanez RG270 be made of? And is there any way to find out what year my RG was made? Like with the serial number or something... Thanks

Is there any huge difference between like an rg270 and a 570? I've never been sure of what kind of quality my guitar is in comparison to other rg's.

Decent guitars around $400? www.chrisguitars.com. look at the B.C. Rich Mockingbird in the "other electrics" section.

I have a RG 270DX. It doesn't have the edge trem, it has a cheaper licensed floyd rose. It also has a bolt-on neck compared to a neck-thru body on more expensive guitars. The PU's are shitty stock ass ibanez, compared to the INF or V7's they put on the more expensive models. I'm sure the wood for the body is as cheap as they get, compared to a spruce or maple top. There's some differences...
