I can't really say that seems to fucked up. I guess because I'm in the military and used to this kinda shit. Its good in a way yes, but in another sense a lot of people are going to have a lot of heart-ache over achieving-obtaining one of these cards.....you know how gay america can be. Well, there's ID's people in the US have now that have more info on them than you'd imagine. I saw these on the news the other day and I'm not sure whether it will do any good or not. People bitched about getting a social security number instead of going by a name and birthdate feeling reduced to a number. But I bet there's a lot of John Smith's with the same b/d and description. Just a guess.
The government already knows more about all of us than we do ourselves so what's the difference. It makes no difference to me. If it's going to keep my family safer then maybe it's a good thing.

I noticed a brief line in the comments about implants and that reminded me of a book I read back in the late 70's or early 80's called Raptured or something similar. Everyone had their personal ID either implanted or tattooed on their wrist and it was used for everything from paying for groceries to ID. I don't remember all the details, but it was something like that.

It is just more incessant hassle, and like I said, this is the first step into something more disgusting. I am fucking sick of needing so many goddamn papers just to do everyday things. I heard my parents talking today that to renew your drivers license, they are going to be changing it to shit where you need 6 forms of ID, here in MA. How much more goddamn shallow are we going to get? I just feel infuriated.

at least we don't need paper to cross states. But if you're taking about driver's license and all your car registration, that's only 2.....

What you're talking about, Bobbi, is a reference to the Book of Revelations and one of the signs that the Anti-Christ's coming and all the good Christians will be taken to heaven (the Rapture) to watch the heathens be tortured, or nuked, or whatever. People have been worried about that for a while, but it technically has to be a financial requirement, and equivalent to the number of the Beast, to be the Anti-Christ thing. So we're cool.

Anybody who's in the military chooses to have this type of thing done, Phil (assuming that's your name). Asking it of citizens because it might help stop some terrorists too lazy and uncommitted to do anything about it is a wee bit extreme. To be honest this seems like the attempts to change dollar mints to foil counterfitters; no matter what you do, they always get around them. Thinking like this helps explain why the U.S. has been infiltraited but has never had any particularly successful spies. It's like 19th century fortress building: 'They have long-range catapults, so let's build our walls wicked far out! Oh shit, they've got even longer-range catapults, so let's build a wall even farther out!' and so on until you've got a fortress with boundaries 90 miles out that still(!) falls. Superficial, monorail thinking.

I only hope this doesn't hinder underage drinking.

As far as the ID's go, I'm all for it if it actually works and eventually reduces identity theft as well as illegal immigrants, etc... (I live close to the border).

they want to give us Brits the same thing.
I absolutely refuse to have an electronic chip I.D. card.
im sure its fine for lots of people, and organisations, but not for a population.
in the past, we have identified ourselves with important things which give us permission to do other things, like travel abroad in the protection of our country, or operate machinery which should not be used irresponsibly. this kind of I.D. card is just "permission to be me".
it is the first step to an Orwell 1984 government.
the worst thing is that the government(I assume the U.S is too) is using the threat of a terrorist attack to explain its nessecity.
this will not stop a terrorist attack, it will give the governemt a greater control over the population.

they cant make me get one. they would have to force me to close my bank account first. they would have to force me to loose an awful lot of things which I could only get back with one of their blasted I.D. cards.

I'm not at all bothered. My freedom will not be impinged by having an ID card and if ID cards prevent just one out of every 100 terrorist attacks then I'm all for them.

Over here they are thinking of making it a legal requirement to carry one and this leads to my only disagreement: the governement should not levy a charge onto obtaining an ID card if it is a legal requirement to do so.

But that's what would more than likely happen, seems like a bit of an uneccesary waste of money to me. And as PST said, people will always be able to find a way to cheat the system, plus extra money would have to go into the running and policing of this system.

And yes, I think it does smell just a tad like 1984.
