New Fretboard

Once I have money, I was thinking of getting a new fretboard on my guitar.
I have a rose wood fretboard on there now. I was thinking of an Ebony one.
So, how possible would that be? How much money? And any other things I need to know?

Thanks a lot

I think you would have to replace the whole neck, and the cost, or even the possibility of being able to replace it would vary. I don't like changing the neck out, unless it is a really good match with the guitar body that it's going to be attached to. I would rather just preserve the guitar in it's current state and buy another one.

What guitar do you own, anyways?

Replacing just a fret board would probably cost as much or more than what the guitar is worth. A new neck, on the hand is a different story.

Its not worth replacing a fretboard. But it is possible. It would be smarter to just have a new neck made if its a bolt on.

First off, you gotta understand that I really like this guitar no matter how good other people think it is, so I am willing to pay a lot of money to get it fixed.

Yeah, I guess a new neck would make the most scence. I've been told that it has some neck problems so I'm kinda leaning towards a new neck.

My guitar is a Washburn WG-200 (Not very good - kinda cheap but I really like it, I really can't shred or get as good Pinch harmonics on other guitars)
I consider this my main guitar.

Now, any suggestions on necks? And how much would a new neck cost + installation?

Thanks

Don't pay for installation if it's a bolt-on. A new neck will cost anywhere from 30-300 bucks. I would recommend something like a Wizard II if you're into thrashing.

First you need to figure out what type of neck pocket your guitar has.. this requires the removal of the neck. Use This link to help you.
Once thats figured out you can either look on ebay for necks or get one custom made at http://www.usacustomguitars.com/ or www.warmoth.com
(make sure to check out the showcase at warmoth) Ibanex also sells necks, but theirs are a little pricey. Most important thing is to make sure the neck fits your body and that it has the same number of frets or else you will have a fucked up scale length leading to wacky intonation.

i would say it's not worth it, but then again, you do love this guitar of yours (it's not a bad thing, i love my axe too) but if i were you, i would do what the others have said and try to invest on a new neck. if i'm not mistaken, your neck pocket is pretty much the same as a fenders, so you should check out warmoth. their necks are made to fit into fender pockets (thats kind of a bad thing..)

but then comes this problem: you probably are wicked good solely on your guitar because it is set up PERFECTLY for you... getting a new neck, or even a fretboard, would totally destroy your perfect set up, rendering it pretty much impossible to set it up JUST the way you like it...

after all, no two guitar necks are exactly alike.. blame mother nature for that....

your on your own buddy...

Ok, I've come to the conclusion that it would make the most sence if I just got some new awesome inlays. That was mainly what I was wanting is just some really awesome inlays.
Would it be cheaper to get new inlays or a new neck? I guess it all depends on how complex the inlays are...

Old old thread

I have a Kramer Vanguard with a shit rosewood fretboard, and it is Neck-thru. Great guitar, awful fretboard. Can it actually be replaced?

If not, what oils would be good for it (it is very dry and is starting to crack a little)

Yes, It can be replaced. I use Murphy's Oil Soap to clean the fretboard and then rub some Gibson Fretoard Conditioner to keep the oil's conditioned.
