The Right Neck Width

I was looking on the custom ran guitars and I was trying to figure out which size to go for either 1 5/8" (which my current ibanez has) or the little larger 1 11/16" . If you have smaller hands go with the smaller one or is it just based on how one feels or is comfortable with? Any ideas? Might have been convered once but I didn't find it in search.

As far as I'm aware, a lot of modern guitars have 1 11/16" nut widths, whereas your classic models like strats and whatnot have nuts that are 1 5/8" wide. I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere, although I could be wrong

Mostly Fenders have 1 5/8" nuts while everyone else ( Gibson, Jackson, B.C. Rich, Moser, ect. ) normally uses 1 11/16". I'm pretty sure Ibanez use 1 11/16' nuts too so you might want to measure you guitar to see.

I would go with 1 11/16" myself. Extra room will not affect you playing but to little room will piss you off greatly.

I need a wide fretboard, my hands are big, although I'm happy with my Wizard Neck I could use a larger one.

Neck depth

Aside from just nut width, pay attention to the thickness of the neck perpendicular to the fretboard too. My BC Rich strat and Warlocks have these real nice thin necks that make playing alot easier. I've tried out old style telecasters and SG's and the necks are like baseball bats. It's ridiculous. Make sure to get a thin neck.

Ran necks are actually thiner then Wizard necks. In fact, Ran necks have the thinest neck of any guitar made that I know of

just clarifying for people, the Wizard II is 43mm at nut, which translates to 1.69 inches, which and 11/16 is 0.6875 which rounds to it... so yeah... ibanez has the 11/16ths

I think most already knew that but I thank you for helping clearify it anyway.

I can't stand playing with 1 5/8" nuts

Yes, you would be asking for a thicker neck. Ran necks are crazy thin. Ask Def or anyone that has a Ran and Ibanez guitar. The Ran neck is actually thiner.

Now I donīt know what I have choosed. The IBanez Wizard neck is the 11/16 and the extrajumbo???
I donīt understand exactly what extra jumbo and what 11/16 means.

11/16 is how big is the fingerboard??
And the frets arenīt that metal things that are in the fingerboard (I mean how "tall" are the frets metalic those thing. Isnīt it???

I mean is ok to be a 11/16 with medium ???

I thoucght I understood, but now I donīt know if I were OK.

ok 11/16 is how wide the neck is, not how thick, but how wide. a 7 string would have a wider neck because it has an extra string. that kind of wide ya. 5/8 are usually on fender strat necks, 11/16 are usually on ibanez and jackson necks

extra jumbo referes to how big the actual fret wire is (the shinny metal fret thingys).

for a guide on different fretwire size go here:

http://www.jimdunlop.com/products/m...rets/index.html

but i suggest you actually try a guitar with extra jumbo frets before you chose it.

1 11/16" is the width of the neck at the nut. Frets are not sized by their width across the fretboard but by their hight off the fretboard and thickness. That help some?
