Weird Pain

Recently my chops have been quite lacking, so I kicked it into gear and starting practicing my butt off. little legato runs, and sweeps.....annoying john petrucci finger exercises.

I did this for about two or three hours everyday for quite a while. I was seeing improvement literally every night, so I kept going...and going


now I can't play guitar for more than 5 minutes without my arms getting tired...and it really kinda hurts...not bad, but just annoyingly painful.

I tried to go a day without playing, and it really didn't seem to help, anyone ever encounter this?

right now I'm hopped up on tylenol and muscle rub just to practice my duet I have to play off at school soon.

When you practice guitar, you are working out your muscles.

If you've ever worked out, imagine going to the Gym after a month of no lifting and starting back where you left off, or, doing even more. You'd be sore as fuck the next day or the day after next. Sounds like you jumped in a little too quickly. Continue what you're doing but make sure you do at most 10 minutes of streches and take sporadic breaks.

I wouldn't worry, doesn't sound serious unless it keeps up for more than a month.

ok, i was just freaking out over small stuff....but I'm not much of a worker-outer.

I played football in Junior High, and then quit....and quit working out as well....

Little warm-ups and stretching will take you a long way to avoid this shit. At least when I'm going to rehearsels these days, I always start with these:

Clasp your hands loosely as in prayer and then roll them around as wide as you can go, slow at first and the speed up. This is also great, because you'll immediately notice if there's something like tendonitis brewing.
Grab the fingers and pull the hand in all possible angles, stretch it out.
Roll shoulders and stretch arms in all angles.

I know it might seem a little goofy, but I blame this as much as practice for being able to play for hours every day.

Bingo Warm ups get you prepared to play physically and mentally. Starting to play really early in the day is great too, because it keeps you from slacking off. Even if you don't want to play for long, just get into a habit of early day warm ups/practice.
