a couple of pickup/wiring questions

what the hell does Repotting a guitar pickup do? http://www.projectguitar.com/tut/dip.htm ?

I also want to know, I'm very likely going to be buying a par of Seymour Duncan Jazz/Jb pickups and putting them in my Jackson RX10D. Since the jackson only has a Volume knob and a three way switch I was wonfering if it would be very much trouble to put another volume knob and a master tone knob on there while changing the pickups? Should I then also buy a new pot (I think thatīs what it's called) for the volume knob already there?

thanks

ok, if your control cavity is big enough to accomodate the amound of extra pots needed, then there should be no problem installing them. just drill a hole big enough for the top part and thats all to it.

if your going to install new pickups, then theres really no need to replace the pots. i THINK thats only neccesary when installing active pickups such as emgs...

if your pickup is microphonic it's a good ideea to pott it. this usually happens to cheap pickups . brand pickups normally come allready potted so there's no need for you to do that.

the volume pot influences your tone. for humbuckers you should use 500k pots. i think that you allready have one there so just let it be. as for the now volume pot i wouldn't do that to that sexy rr

Potting is permanently setting a coil or similar electronic device with a liquid that becomes solid after filling all the voids in the device. The purpose in the case of pickups is if you have mechanically loose coil windings or screws which are causing microphonic feedback. I have repotted a pickup using melted beeswax before. You have to be very careful to not meltdown the bobbin if it is plastic. Mine came out pretty warped after the experience, but the feedback was reduced. Even a brand new pickup with a coil that has been properly potted can benefit in non-permanent locations like the set screws from this technique. Once the set screws are where you want them you can individually pot them by dripping hot beeswax on top of them.

Not if you can solder and use a wrench. Make sure you make a detailed sketch of your current wiring before you fuck with it. If you are adding or changing shit there are plenty of tutotials online.

Would I go ahead and replace the volume knob just because I was in there? Hell no, not if you're not having problems with the current one. I would however give it a quick spray with a can of pot cleaner and work it back and forth a few times.
