I know nothing about acoustics and I've never owned one but I'm starting to get into them. Anyone recommend me a descent one for around $400-$500? I'd like one where the body is more rounded out and not big and bulky. I'd also like it to have a cutaway.

Try to find a cheap or used Taylor...to me, Taylors are the best sounding commercial acoustic guitars (which means im not including some private stock guitar for 40,000 dollars made it some guys basement)

oh, and dont underestimate Takamines...great guitars for a fairly cheap price

I have an ovation acoustic and it kicks ass. It's a gray ovation tangent series 7357.

Maybe a Martin. Or an Ibanez elec acoustic, but I'm not sure what you are looking for (traditional or electric acoustic).

i had an ovation with an engleman spruce top (only 1000 made i believe) I traded it to my guitar teacher who owns a music store for a brand new Taylor 914 CE, i made about 1000 dollars on the trade

anyway, it was the only ovation i've ever played that sounded good, so im not really a huge fan of ovation, i dont like the rounded, plastic backs

yeah ovations are sweet. right now i just have a cheap epiphone acoustic, but i dont play acoustics much.

An excellent 12 Stringer is made by Eko, "Ranger" I think it was called. You can get them pretty cheap nowadays, for aroun £100.

The back of an acoustic guitar doesn't have much impact upon the tone, i did a design project for my Design Tech A-Level, and there have been guitars that have the back built from paper mache to prove it :P Its all about the wood used for the front... and the bridge

Its not plastic its some composite material used in helicopters. Thats what the guy who started ovation worked with before he got into luthery.

So I went to G-center, and I didn't even fucking try any cheap acoustics, I went straight into the room with all the $1000+ guitars . Yeah I don't know anything about acoustics, but I liked the sound of the Martins, rich and heavy. Taylors I tried and I liked the neck feel and all, but I didn't like the tone as much, was kinda bright sounding and the frets felt metallic and clanky. I'm gonna buy this guitar next week, it looks like a good bargain.

You should check out Seagull/Simon and Patrick guitars (made in canada) they go for relatively cheap, and have good reviews.

I bet you could get a guitar that sounds as good or better for cheaper, just without all of those outrageous cosmetics and brazillian rosewood. Personally, I'm a Sitka Spruce, Engleman Spruce, and Cedar fan. You gotta go with what you want though

Yeah I'm bringing this back cuz I don't wanna start a new one. So I've got like 4-500 dollars to spend and still, I don't know much about acoustics. I've been looking at this thing:

Which one? I'm not sure if I should get an acoustic-electric or a decent traditional one. I really liked it when plugged in.

I recently purchased a sweet Art & Lutherie acoustic guitar with a solid Spruce top, Antique Burst matte finish, rosewood bridge, for AUD$399. It's got a brilliant natural tone and immense depth that nothing else in that price range had. Even the thousand dollar + guitars had less volume and had a hard, less natural and less resonating sound to them (probably because of the laquer finishes). It was exactly what I wanted, and I feel lucky to have found it for such a cheap price.

So I was comparing a Martin D-15 with a Taylor Dreadnought for the same price, and they both have things I like, but neither has both. The Martins have that rich low end, but like I can't hear the mids that much. While on the other hand, the Taylors have that bright sound with the mids more expressed, so I can hear the notes more clearly especially when I'm finger picking, but it lacks in the bass though.

You know, the pick you use makes a HUGE difference in sound when playing an acoustic. I love using a jim dunlop .46 or .60mm nylon pick, they give me a warm natural sound. However, I find that if I use a 3mm big stubby or triangle (or several other 1mm+ picks), the sound is way brighter.

Try experimenting with those two guitars you like, using different picks. Who knows, maybe you'll find that using a hard pick with the Martin, or a soft nylon pick with the Taylor, gives you a better all-round sound.
