Techincal Death Metal.

What are some good bands that you can compare to Necrophagist? I like them but I am kind of new to this genre.

There is a semi local band here in central florida called Neomortem.

Neomortem site

They are really good...worth a listen.

Nile,Cryptopsy,Suffocation, they don't really sound like Necrophagist but if your asking for technical you can't go wrong with any of those.

Tech death (in addition to those already mentioned):

Capharnaum
Spawn Of Possession
Severed Savior
Visceral Bleeding
Anata
Martyr
Theory In Practise

None of these really sound like Necrophagist (Martyr probably come closest) but they are technical death metal. If you really like Muhammed's soloing style you could do worse than listen to Vital Remains. Although they aren't classified as technical death per se, Dave Suzuki has a very similar style to Herr Suicmez.

i'm not big on techy death myself, but you can't go wrong with devolved, psycroptic and decapitated, the latter not being ultimately brutal but still quite good.

Devloved aren't brutal at all. Here, check my favourite bands list, there are some exceptions, but a lot of them fit under 'Technical Death Metal', well with it being my favourite genre and all.

Anata, Atheist, Astriaal, Beheaded, Cephalic Carnage, Cryptopsy, Cynic, Death, Decapitated, Decrepit Birth, Deeds Of Flesh, Deepred, Demilich, Dying Fetus, Emperor, Exhumed, Fuck I'm Dead, Godless Truth, Goratory, Gorgasm, Gorguts, Immolation, Immortal, IHR, Meshuggah, Morbid Angel, Necrophagist, Nile, Origin, Psycroptic, Pyaemia, Severed Saviour, Spawn Of Possession, Suffocation, The Day Everything Became Nothing, Theory In Practice, Visceral Bleeding, Wormed, Yattering.

The only thing I dont like about necrophagist is that they are to melodic on their lead guitar stuff. Other than that they are good musicians of course but I cant get in to the melodic sounding lead guitar stuff.
Check out DEEDS OF FLESH or DISGORGE ( cali) CRYPTOPSY.

Some of the newer work is more complicated, and it is very good stuff for sure, but not really tech death. Easy mistake, though, I suppose, so don't worry about it.

Ok so I'm trusting you guys advice on this... My music class at school is the lamest thing in lamesville [they don't even teach you anything] and I have the gayest most faggoty teacher in all homosexual history x12. He said 'Ok so what should we cover this term, what would you like to touch on this term guys?" Me - 'Death Metal' Him - "Oh yeah lets play power chords all term, great thinking Myles''

SOOOOOOooooooooOO I need the most technical most mind bogglingly insane fucking mental impossible agagaffa song in the universe to go to him "Oh yeah play that you fucking cunt head gay brain cheese teeth"

Im already gonna take the The Wretched Spawn DVD in to show him Frantic Disembowelment and say "Yeah your like totally gay, you know"

THINK GUYS I need the most complex song since ever. Oh and it needs to be downloadable.

Is this guy a guitar teacher or is he a music class teacher. Those ignorant assumptions really piss me off when its some wanker musician.

Any Necrophagist song will make a complete dick of him, so if you can't get Advanced Cropse Tumor don't worry.

Yeah, the cymbals are often in 4/4 time, but the pedals are usually going along with the riffage which could be at, for example, 23/16. Then he sometimes will start another cymbal pattern in another time signature. So I wouldn't say they are pretty much all 4/4.

Athiest- Air.

This song would be much better to show him than any Necrophagist. Why? It's quite simple. This guy is clearly ignorant to death metal and will simply write off Necrophagist as an anomaly and will also further fluster you by criticizing their music as hard on the ears. No, a pretentious, hippy-loving music teacher will be far more receptive to something that incorporates many different flavors, and this song will definitely impress him more than Necrophagist. Trust me on this one.

Here are some more songs you should use-

Athiest- Green
Atheist- Elements
Atheist- Brains
Athiest- Mother Man
Cynic- the entire Focus album
Death- Overactive Imagination
Death- Trapped in a Corner

You might also show him Atheists song "Samba Briza", because he will surely be impressed that a lowly death metal band would be so explorative and experimental, to venture outside of the realm of inferior music they had been banished to.

If you need the song Air, I will send it to you.

Yes, I should ahve thought about Atheist and Cynic. They'd be bands that are easier for him to "accept". Particularly Cynic I think. I would still show him Necrophagist too.

Yes, thats mostly true. The song Stengah on the album Nothing has a pretty strange time signiture. I can barly play it on drums becuase i get confused thinking about it.

Man, that song is not too hard actually. I can play it, and I'm not really even a drummer. The first riff on Rational Gaze is a toughie though, with those weird splash cymbal placements. A friend of mine can play the whole Nothing album basically on drums, now I just need an 8-string guitar....................

Canada had some really good thrash, too. Other than the obvious mention of Annihilator, I'm listening to a band called Sacrifice right now. This is good shit, man.

Technical Death Metal

Some technical death metal bands I haven't seen listed here yet that I listen to: Sinners Bleed (If you don't own From Womb to Tomb, you probably perform fellatio on senior citizens (either males or females wearing strap-ons) on a regular basis, and you might as well kill yourself), Gory Blister (imagine Sound of Perseverence if Chuck wasn't born with a pink diamond in his pants), Neuraxis, Coprofago, Neglected Fields (Jesus, that's good tech death right thur), Korum, Carcariass, Oppressor, Shadows Land (sometimes it gets a little bit too showy though), Dungortheb, Pavor, Man Must Die, Lethargy, Nefas, Illogicist, Coram Lethe, Daath, Natron, Sceptic (Hiro is one of my favorite guitarists), Burning Inside (listen to the drumming on this baby, the same Death/Control Denied signature beat we grew up on from Richard Christy, turns into ostentatious orgasms of pretentious drumming insanity), and I consider Nonexist (listen to the riffing on the song Ebony Tower and chug my chode), Afterdeath, Acid Death, and Alarum (yeah that's a ridiculous stretch of the imagination) to go hand-in-hand with technical death metal. If you're not a bigot and you just like riffs in death metal, Bolt Thrower and Arghoslent (intelligent racism for the 21st century, Quelling the Simian Surge... if only stinkbags could be limited so easily..). If you just like intelligent humor, check out Scumbitch (playing cunt hockey under a bridge iced over with zebra cum), Grinded Nig, or Eradykate. Bad technical death metal: Broken Hope (if you consider it that) - horrible, horrible music. It's not catchy, it's just a bunch of 2 second ejaculatory riffs that aren't even good. Psychotogen - very bad attempt at copying Florida death metal legends. Darkness Remains - You can't try to play technical death metal and metalcore together (The End, pun and not a pun) unless of course you play the majority of your shows at males only bars. Creepmime - Ugh, bad, bad; trying to combine Opeth (a band for overweight people to listen to) and Gothenburg; sounds like Vinny Castilla's luggage going through security check before he got deported, but not as funny. Blastfame - Among the most ignominious; they are just simply a band trying to copy Cryptopsy but not being as skilled, and so failing miserably with their horrendous music. If you're like me and you like anything with a lot of riffs you can headbang to and play air guitar to (that's right, I'm not good enough for a real one because I spend all my time masturbating to spanish game shows) and you don't care about vocals (1% of a band to me), then it wouldn't hurt to check out Spastic Ink (the riffs pull down your pants and give you the sodomy of a lifetime), Behold the Arctopus (*slurp*), Andromeda (Johan owns), or Dragonforce (great solos). You're probably thinking "This guy just ruined our whole blog." You're probably also thinking "Jeez, I never realized how small my genitalia is." Combine both of those thoughts, get some enzyte, and shut your mouth. Long live tech death.

Some Guy mention Disgorge, i don't know what Disgorge is he talking about, but none of the Disgorge's are Technical, mostly Brutal Death Metal, Technical Death Metal are bands like Spawn Of Possession, Necrophagist, i don't know if Odious Mortem could be in that list but, anyway, i wouldn't also mention Chuck's Death.

Myles, Frantic is the perfect song for you to show the poofter what Death Metal really is.

I'd say Necrophagist is Progressive Death Metal!

Yeah

Quo Vadis has some unique stuff I've heard. Tech death/thrash I think of Quo Vadis, Hellwitch, Obliveon, Divine Syndrome, and, hmm that's all I've heard.

I was glad to see Martyr mentioned a few times here...being from Canada, we get to hear them all the time, but seems that not many other have heard of them. Kudos, folks! Also, Dan M. from Martyr is playing with Quo Vadis, and doing time with Cryptopsy as well.

I'd include Sadus in this list, but only because I'm a bassist, and DiGiorgio is absolutely amazing on the fretless.

Devolved, also, was a suprise to see, and while not brutal, they are definately technical...sort of a much heavier Meshuggah, i thought.

Classing Alarum as technical is a bit of a reach, I would put them in closer to progressive - in fact, I wouldnt really call them death metal at all.
As far as devolved go, they are more of a hardcore band, and the only thing that is technical about them is the drumming.

Not that im particuarly anul about generas.

I love strong bass presence. I've actually been considering transitioning from guitar to bass, but since I don't have a bass, I'll just stick with guitar.

Meshuggah are technical, you fucking gimp. If I even have to explain why then you really need to get an education in music.

Technical - I dunno. Maybe.

So fucking repetitive and boring it's not funny - Definately. Every single riff is like a single trem picked note -
1111,1111,11,11,1111,111111, x24

Until the next riff which might be this :
222,222,222222,22,222,222,222222,22 x24

Until next riff which is a very tricky combination of the 2:
1111,1111,22,1111,22,22,22222,22222,11,1,1,222222 x310

I don't know if it's just me that views Meshugguh like that, but fucked if that's technical.

Anyway that's my opinion of them so go ahead and tell me I'm wrong and otherwise to what I said. IN - MY - FUCKING - OPINION.

I just cannot stand them.

I don't care about your opinion of Meshuggah, but your perception of what technicality really is seems to be incorrect. It's not just about playing a riff with 50 different notes in two seconds; it has a lot to do with the rhythms, time changes, and other things like that too.

They certainly are repetitive. But they have to be because some of their riffs go for ages and change time many times, eg. you might think you're hearing a riff for the 9th time, but it may only be the fourth time.

I disagree with your "meshuggah riffs". You're being a bit shallow there Myles. That certainly isn't the only kinds of riffs they churn out. And they certainly trem pick far less than the likes of Morbid Angel for example.

Meshuggah are definately technical. Just not in your average technical kind of way.

I like all their shit, but I heard some of their latest (Catch 33) and wasn't too impressed. Haake's drumming seems way too simplistic compared to his performances on 'Nothing' and 'I'.

Oh, and Myles.......

...... You suck, you're a dumb fuck, gay, I hate you, you're a stupidhead and you clearly need an education in music.

Meshuggah are amazingly complex in the rhythms that they employ. Take a listen to any of Frederik's solos as well - fucking insanely technical at times.

I really don't care if it offends you, they are not technical TO ME. Would you like a lesson in music? I happen to have plenty of musical training. NO, technical does not mean a thousand notes per second. Don't take this the wrong way I don't intend to come off sounding like "Hey, I'm better than you are!" I don't consider it technical when a bands drummer strings together a couple of measures in one time signature, a couple in another, and one in another all while the rest of the band plays something that equals out to be the same which happens to be exactly what Meshuggah does I've read their interviews. I've used similar techniques in my own songs before.

Listen to "War". Which is the closest they've ever come to sounding like anyone else, namely something along the lines of math-thrash, if that's even a subgenre.

Meshuggah is'nt death metal. They're unique. Which is more than what we can say for many death metal bands.

Their use of very odd time signatures and the mixture of Thordenthal and Haake qualifies them as technical in my book. Their bane, however is that they've never tried to write an album of twelve "Frantic Disembowelments".

Nah

I think I mentioned Sinners Bleed in a previous post, great band. I remember when I saw something online that said "Psychotogen: Mind Altering technical death metal." Because I'm a fan of technical death metal I checked it out. In the end, I thought it was horrendous. It was a band trying to work off of a Florida death metal style, but being less skilled musicians and playing at a general tempo which is far too slow. All I care about is if I can headbang to it or what not, and you can't do that to Psychotogen. Boo. Anyways, Psychotogen isn't the worst band out there, but as I say with a lot of bands out there: Why listen to it when there are so many better bands. There are 20 or 30 technical death metal bands (probably a lot I don't know about to add to that) at least that I would rather listen to. Sorry for long rant, gents.

You, my friend, are an idiot.

1. No one could notice Sinners Bleed in that mess of words you posted earlier.
2. Psychotogen is a very skilled, not slow at all, and the hell judges music by being able to headbang to it?

sorry but i'd be inclined to disagree with you there, good sir. i think only their vocals are hardcore-influenced. same applies to the haunted, and they aren't hardcore (with the exception of "re-VULVA")

Alright, I really need someone to spoonfeed me information with a little contrast and compare on Brutal Death Metal and Technical Death Metal.

Its driving me nuts reading all of this conversation and not being able to have a firm grasp on either of the genres.

For example (And I realize that I will be insulted and Flamed for this), when I think Brutal Death Metal I think of Hate Eternal, Akercocke and Immolation. When I think of Technical Death Metal, I include the aforementioned bands alongside with Spawn of Possession, Deeds of Flesh and Origin.

But please, someone help me out here. Whats the difference?

Thank you way in advance for tolerating this mess of ignorance.

I thought i was the only guy on the forum into Deepred, they kick ass!! I wish they reformed and released another full length.

The new Vomit Remnants is pretty technical, Mental Demise is pretty unique semi tech gore death grind, Ancient Necropsy, Christ Denied, Insidous Decrepency, and Benighted are some bands you definately need to check out.

Heh, Deepred were one of the first death metal bands I ever heard. I heard them before Suffocation even. They kicked my arse so badly back in the day.

Despondency is another superb band I'm quite fond of. Great chunky riffs, great drummer. Perhaps not 100% technical deathmetal, half grind/brutal dm as well.
