yeh man, a pair of earplugs is always good. i have earplugs for rehearsing as well as gigs, if you don't want to fuck with the volume you say you know what you're doing, i'll take your word for it. don't say you can't afford earplugs, you can get a pack of 4 sets for 99c

and if you do have more to spend, get the ones they mold into your ear for a perfect fit, they cost a bunch but I've heard they're worth it.

put you ear right up to the speaker. It will be pretty loud for a couple minutes, but after that everything will be much quieter. Problem solved.

i dont really understand what you want to know but...

our practises are very loud too for the same reason.
unfortunately im already deaf. earplugs dont work for me because they muffle everything. clarity is much more important than volume.
the two things we do to keep the volume down are first, position everything very carefully. ie if any of your instrements have two cabs, separate them on oppposite sides of the room. spread everything around like a clock.
drums in the middle facing 6 oclock, bass speakers at 2 and 10 oclock, pa at 3 and 9, and guitars at 5 and 7. then everyone stands in the middle in front of the kit. put all the speakers facing the standing players.

you should change this around to get the best for everyone(in my case, the drummer wants to hear the bass most, the singer wants the bass most, and everyone else wants the drums.) so everyone can hear everything well enouh to pick it out if they need to without having everything at 11.

then we mute the drums, by sticking loads of stuff in the bassdrum, and then gaffataping old clothes to the skins where the drummer dont hit them. (this is because he doesnt get the bounce he needs from dampening pads) and draping stuff over the symbols. sacriicing drum tone for hearing.

and if you dont wanna go deaf, avoid live concerts.

I tend to wear earplugs alot of times, since there is no way to EQ the drums, drummers are too fucking stubborn....

There are a brand of earplugs called "Hearos"

They cut about 20db alltogether, but dont kill the high end off of what you are hearing.

Much better than those spongy yellow jobs that turn your audio perception in to a sub-woofer.

Only bummer>>>>they're 14.00 bucks

use earplugs. you dont have to get super deluxe ones, just a pair of the foam ones will do, they enlarge to fill your ear. you say you value clarity..but if youre playing as load as you say you do all the treble will rattle your eardrums, causing a hissing effect. it may be a little muffled with earplugs, but i think thats better than that irritating buzzing sound

Or just leave it there so you wouldn't have to stick it back in..
I use the moulding earplugs myself, they're 4.50 for 4 which is about $7
