Changed careers to suit my playing!
I used to work in an advertising firm in downtown Toronto making fairly good money, but the band I was playing in at the time was offered a tour. Well, after 3 years with the company, I figured I'd be able to get a 1 month leave of absence, but my prick boss said, "Well, I'm not sure if there'll be a place for you when you come back, and you'll lose all your accounts" So I shook his hand and said, "Go screw yourself, you prick!"
Since then, I've taken up ceramic tile installation as a trade, and have been doing it since about 1997. I now work for myself, and can take off time as I need it, just by not booking jobs for days when I'm playing a show. The money is much better, too!!!!
Later.

I've got a good, full time job. If I ever got a tour opportunity, I wouldn't know what to do. I do have two weeks vacation though.

The biggest problem we seem to have when it comes to jobs is this: My guitar player works afternoon shift (3-11) Sunday to Thursday, my singer works day shift (9-6) Monday to Friday, as well as bartending Friday and Saturday nights (9:30-3), my drummer works days (10-6) Monday to Wednesday and Saturdays. Unless we want to jam after midnight during the week (which we do when we have gigs coming up) then we can only jam Friday from 7-9, Saturday from 7-9, and Sunday from noon-2.
But...
If my singer is stuck in heavy traffic coming home from work, she is invariably late for rehearsal, so Friday's jam is nixed...If my drummer doesn't come straight to rehearsal from work, which he usually doesn't, then Saturday's jam is nixed...If one of us isn't too hung over to jam on Sunday, which usually is the case, then Sunday's jam is nixed. We've managed to have a grand total of 3 FULL BAND rehearsals in the last 6 months while paying $1,800 in jam space rent...although, to be fair, we've gotten TONS of good jamming time with just the 3 of us (no singer) to work on new stuff or tighten the musical end of it.
Anyone else have this kind of problem?
Cheers

I have that problem a lot with my band, its not rare.. we all have different shifts at different times.. but sunday is the time when none of us work.. but when we want a band practice in the week its pretty difficult to sort something out

I hate Houston's scene. If we even get lucky enough for a bad ass show not many people show up. Can't wait until Oct 1st, though... Suffocation, Cryptopsy, and Cephalic Carnage.........

You said it man. It is so hard to assemble people to jam. You sound like you've got it much worse than I do, since your band is old and thus has to be more responsible (work more).
I play in two bands, with members ranging from 16 years old to 28 years old. It seems the older the members, the less available they are ... the 16 year old is almost always free, while the 28 year old just returned from a 6 month absence! I feel sorry for the shitty situation your band is in.
By the way what kind of band is it? I ask because there are two 'different' things about it: first it only has one guitar player and second it has a female vocalist. Do you have any recorded stuff? I'd love to hear it if so.
Just feel happy that you actually DO have a full line up. Well, my bands do too, but both have experienced problems finding musicians.
Often what happens is like what has happened for you. Some of the musicians get to assemble lots. For one of my bands we often can get everyone there except for the drummer, so we can rehearse and write songs with the three guitars and the vocals often, but we have to add drumming later. If you're not jamming with a drummer, you don't really need a 'place' to jam, you can do it basically anywhere because you don't have to play loud.
I'm surprised that out of the 4 member band no one has a basement available for reheasing. Paying money to find a place seems useless because usually the drummer has a place to practise anyway.

Hey, Rattlehead.
Yeah, it's true, the older you are, the more bills you have to pay. lol. We used to jam at the drummers place, but found it too inconvenient. If just me and the guitar player wanted to do some jamming, work on parts or whatever, we couldn't, as he'd be out or something. The "dedicated" rehearsal place is about the only thing that really works for us.
As for our style of music, click here and give it a listen.
Cheers
