odd things you do with your guitars
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
well...anything odd you do with your guitar? for example, like Vai, do you stuff your spring cavity with tissue papers? like Van Halen, do you boil your strings? if you have a floyd rose, do you leave your nuts locked, and cut the excess string from the head stock, or unlocked and keep changing your tunings during a song? if you have an acoustic, do you keep a wet spong inside your acoustic guitar to keep it from drying? and i dont mean messed up tunings that you made on your own either. etc etc etc....
so, anything?
me, i tried that tissue paper thing with my spring cavity. at first i hated it coz it too away from my treble, my harmonics were minimal, and pinch harmonics were impossible! but at the same time, my riffs, and my rhythm picked up tremendously. so i'm thinking of putting that in one of my guitars as a rhythm guitar, andthe other, i'll keep as a lead
the other thing is, looking at those fernandez sustainor pickups, i started messing around with magnets. put a magnet right over a pickup that you're using, but make sure its not touching the string, it kinda sounds like you're using an ebo. it works best with those magnets found in speakers/cabnets etc. and also if you use steel strings rather than chrome, nickle or soemthing else.

Occasionally I put my balls inside it and strum myself to ecstacy.

The Vai tissuepaper in trem cavity is to stop the springs from vibrating, which sometimes they do and it gets picked up by the pickups... not just a silly fad.

I like to use bore oil instead of lemon oil on my fret boards. That's kinda rare and odd to some people.

Does it really take away from treble and pinch harmonics? I REALLY need to do this to my Charvel neckthru. The ghost notes are killing me, but I don't wanna lose any harmonics or sustain or treble.

tissue in the spring cavity shouldn't dampen the strings at all.. harmonics and sustain should be as they are normally.. i tried this before when my springs kept vibrating and making shit sounds, but used a rag instead of tissue, and it worked absolutely perfectly

it should absorb the sound. i mean, if you ever tried making your own sound proof room, or if you ever tried doing projects like shouting in a pillow or using a gun while wrapped around a thick layer of sweaters. it absorbs the sound. it wouldnt absorb bass sounds coz bass is much harder to absorb. like if you ever had some gangster fucker pull up his car beside you, his stupid music starts to make your car vibrate like some crazy lil dildo.
but then again, there are certian pickups that arnt affected by that. the hotter, or active pickups prolly wont have a change in sound. but some single pickups, or other pickups, it just might work

I have a question though does the tissue paper really have to be tight inside the cavity, do I need to use a lot? Or just a small mount pressing against the springs will do?

The foam-ish stuff you get in the EMG packs works wonders for stopping the springs from vibrating although I have to say that it does take away some of the treble.

Work on technique, find a new part on the string where it's easier to pull em off? Adjust the gain on your amp accordingly, new pickups too perhaps.

umm..i just grabbed about 8 or 9 klneex pieces, give em a couple of folds, and make sure it fits in just fine with the cavity. if you have a floyd rose, then you may be able to see it from the bottom of the bridge(on the front of the body)...but it depends on how you're using it.
more loose cloth-like-material, more sound absorbant it is.

I thought Vai used cotton instead of tissue paper. One weird thing I do is i made a coushion out of paper towels for the Locking nut on my Westone because it kept breaking strings. It works fine and is cheaper than a new nut.

wait...so you removed your locking nut? interesting...
but all the strings i ever break on my floyd are always closer to my bridge, as suppose to my nut, so perhaps your nut had some sharp edge that kept breaking it or somthing...?
but a paper towel, wouldnt that force you to sacrifice your open chords? but would cut down on noise if you're sloppy, or somthing
