Get a real amp and mess with the EQ

theirs no magic eq settings that will make you sound like a certain genre

exactly, just learn to play in the style first

and ofcourse it depends greatly what amp you use, but still its a good idea to at least try and be original with your tone.

all of those bands you listed have completely differnt tones from each other..

for metal core, enough lows to give a solid chug withouw muddying up... enough treble and mids to cut through the mix and give character to the sound, but to much treble, gain and or presence can make it shrill and grainy... for gain you want something that will chunk up and give you a heavy sound, but not to much or it will turn to muck...

yeah... it all varies greatly from amp to amp...

Mesa Rectifier

I have a Mesa Triple Rectifier amp and was wondering what are some good settings for that amp to acheive a sound like As I Lay Dying? I am asking about everything from channel, to bold or spongy, eq settings, etc.

I can play the style, and I have messed around with different settings, I just want to get a basis to start from so I know i'm in the right direction. I am close just not quite there.

Thanks

Darkest Hour is very melodic and NO metalcore band could ever write a song like Vertunis, Aquetis.. mmm love that song! But yeh Darkest hour mix alot, expect their next cd to be awesome, now with Kris writting riffs and leads, and Devin Townshed producing it.. man its gonna kick ass.

Anyways I have Mike's 5150 Settings..

Lead Pre - 6
Low - 7.5
Mid - 7
High - 5
Res - 7
Pres - 7

Those numbers might be off a bit, but it should be pretty close.. it was what I could make out when I saw them live. Mike plays Gibson Les Paul's loaded with JB's in the bridge.

I also have the settings from a 5150 that Ken from Unearth was holding in an ad.. havent tried them yet with my 7 string loaded with the EMG 707 yet.. and Ken uses a Maxon OD-808 infront of the amp. Dont expect his Framus tone.. but he did use 5150's for some recordings, and maybe has some as backups.. I dunno

lead Pre - 4
Low - 10
Mid - 6
High - 4
Res - 10
Pres - couldnt make out

I have NO idea what his OD-808 settings are either..

And since you never said what amp you have.. then no one can help you much. Plus most of those bands use Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier's (Unearth has.. BDM has, and Killswitch has as backups)

Mike using a Marshall?? Thats odd, he's used the 5150's for awhile, until recently.. now he "uses" Kranks.. And Kris still uses the XXX's which he gets for free, and his LTD's which he also gets for free

Find out what Carcass & At The Gates settings were first, then build your own around that.

besides... c'mon, you listen to death metal
i have this thing, before i listen to someones opinion of "music", i must know what they listen to. i talent isnt necisarrily in how much you blast beat, how deep you growl, and how much muddy and sloppy random tremelo picking you do. i like bands that play real songs.

It seems like pretty much all metalcore bands use 5150s so my advice is to buy a 5150.

Bleeding through, is metalcore.
Atreyu, hopesfall are both pop hardcore ( fashioncore )
sworn enemy, is like power metalcore etc.. throwdown, hatebreed, nj blood

metalcore usually has alot of breakdowns after a speedy riff
hardcore doesnt have breakdowns at least not alot and is more punk influenced.

check out the band , between the buried and me , best fuckin metalcore band till this day!!!

You'll get ignorant replies from ignorant assholes. They're more concerned with 'correct' metal genres than guitar tone- so f%^& 'em.

KSE use H&K Triaxis heads (bit like the Boogie DR's) with a damn good preamp and maybe an outboard Boss to tidy shit up. If you can't afford more than the Boss pedal then try a LINE 6- it has an 'insane' setting, but things get out of control at higher dB.

Screw around with the EQ, you'll find with the right guitar & pickup configuration most sounds are possible. You can achieve the gain using an ML-2 or something similar run through a decent tube amp.
