crippled hand...well not exactly, but occaisionally

ok, so a few months (six to be precise) ago i broke my knuckles in my fretting hand (fractured actually) falling off my bike

initially trying to play when they were suposedly better was hard but this passed and it was all fine...minus the lack of movement that i had before.

however recently playing has been hurting my hand and my fingers locking from the knuckle giving me only two moveable joints in my index and second finger after extended periods of playing.

Im wondering if anybody on this site could give me any info or advice as ive been to the doctors and he just sold me some bullshit on how they had healed prefectly fine, straight and in line...

Thank you,

Joe

Maybe this pain will pass with time, but that may be bad advice.

See a chiropractor or something, or a few to make sure they aren't full of shit.

ok, so it probably wasn't bullshit he told me but i just didn't feel any confidence with what he said...if they were fine there would be no locking or pain, right?

I used to have a similar problem after I fractured my wrist about 2 years ago. The doctors told me it had healed fine and that I should be able to play my guitar fine, but after about 2 minutes of strumming a day (it was my right hand) I'd get pains up my whole arm and literally couldnt even pick a string. I eventually got through it but for about 4 or 5 months I had to slowly ease my way back into it.
You say it only happens after extensive playing - maybe you should just cut down the amount of time you play for each time and just get back into it as it feels right.

Do some hand exercises. Check out John Petrucci's Rock Dicsipline for some great hand exercises.

About seeing a Chiropractor, Don't. They know barely anything, their training is minimal. They can provide short term relief through a series of cracks and jerks, but mostly they never heal the patient's ailment, they just know how to get rid of a bit of pain. That's why they often recommend you see them over a long time scale.

In Australia, 6 people died in 2003 from having their necks broken from Chiropractors when a 'neck crack' went wrong and stopped blood supply getting to the brain. But they keep it under wraps, the media never says anything.

So don't see a Chiropractor, if you're going to see anyone, see a General Practitioner (not the same one you saw obviously), who can recommend someone, or otherwise see a Physiotherapist.

But cut down on extensive playing as blackroseimmortal said, and just be patient about your wrist, because things take time.
