Jazzy metal
I'm surprised no one has said the basics: Acrimonia (Dreams, best jazz metal instrumental ever in my opinion), Esicastic (very much like cynic), Alarum, Cause for Effect (grind jazz, but actual truer to jazz, not the stuff that people call jazz because it is technical. If you want to call technical death metal "jazz", I can name 50 bands from my cd collection at least. Slob on my transmutational knob you degenerates), Mourning Sign, Vuvr, and if you like jazzy stuff just listen to Jaco Pastorius, Bootsy Collins, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten, Aghora, or anything like that. A horrible wanna be jazz grind band is Nyia. Don't ever listen to them please. I wasted $5.99 on Heads Held High and I would have rather purchased a japanese bondage tea garden video than listened to that bullshit. Nyia and Peter North should do a porno.

Gordian Knot, they are awesome but they are not death metal. Kind of like prog/jazz metal. Spastic Ink is also a good one, songs like Mosquito Brain Surgery have some great jazz parts. Also check out Pestilence like everyone else said, especially the album "Spheres," some great bass work from Jeroen Paul Thesseling. And of course Cynic and Atheist.

Yeah I like Gordian Knot. Aghora is much better though. I have the self-titled Gordian Knot album... tracks 2,3,5,6,7 are good. The rest is slow-paced, Eastern European/Arabian handjob-giving poppycock. At least Aghora plays all the way through. Spastic Ink, Behold the Arctopus, etc. are pretty much just technical progressive metal. It's good, but it's not jazz. I have heard some jazz interludes in the band Coprofago btw.

I say a Rush thread is a good idea. I like Rush.
I'm surprised that Candiria has not been mentioned at all.

Martyr are hands down one of the most amazing bands out there, and they're jazz influences are quite evident. Mostly, that's because both Dan and Francois took jazz guitar and jazz bass lessons as kids. When they finally discovered the world of metal, they said, "Let's combine these!!!" and Martyr was born...a great day in the world of metal
Cheers

Not really death, but if anybody likes jazz-influenced heavy music they'll love Candiria.

How no one can even mention the almighty Exit-13 is beyond me. Also:
Death's Head Quartet
Pain Killer
Naked City
and someone mentioned Cause For Effect. They are fucking genius.
