Atheist is the best anyways.

Some Death is pretty jazzy in the drum parts.

Cynic is okay, if you can handle the production.

Ephel Duath isn't really death metal, but they're fucking crazy. Best jazz/metal combination out there.

how jazzy are you looking

atheist and cynic are the two that are most blatantly jazz influenced
beyond that look into heavier tech metal bands

for instance gorguts are extremely jazzy but its not very obvious

death gorguts immolation

Cynic, Atheist, and later Pestilence, in that order. I'd also strongly recommend Watchtower (thrash/jazz) and Dead Horse (thrash/grindcore/jazz).

Here's the exact order I'd have you go in-

Cynic
Atheist
Watchtower
Dead Horse
Pestilence

There are other similar bands, but the jazz influence is strongly toned down. Do you like Rush? They're a good band to check to check out if you are into heavy, complicated, jazz-based rock.

Yeah, but I told him Rush weren't metal. They are heavy prog rock, with a lot of jazz based riffs and structure. I just figured, since I ran out of metal, there's always Rush, and Rush kicked ass. Not to get off topic, but do you like Rush? Maybe I'll start a Rush post. I'm sure everybody's heard of them, just curious who likes them or not.

The clear answer here is Cynic - Focus. A simply brilliant album, if not a big "out there".

Pestilence is okay, but after listening to Cynic and most Atheist (save Elements), you'll feel cheated.

I never heard anything from Atheist. I read that they're influenced by Rush. If so, I got to check them out.

I'd go for Atheist, Cynic and Gorguts.

Edit: Oi Vey! I forgot Demlich and PsyOpus.

I wouldn't exactly say Necrophagist are jazzy, more classical. they are slightly jazzy I guess.

I'm not sure why you left out Elements. In my opinion it's their best album, and it's certainly the most jazz influenced one. BTW, I really have a feeling the person who started this post would probably like Yattering. There's not much jazz to them, but they are good technical death metal laden with the same chaotic time changes you'd hear from jazz based metal bands like Watchtower or Atheist.

While that is a great video, the DVD lets you see all the crazy cymbal shit he does. And he makes it look ridiculously easy, half the time he's pulling funny faces at the camera.

I was thinking of Farmakon, but their not really a death band. They're probably more thrash-jazz than death-jazz but they're worth a spin none-the-less.

Jazzy metal

I'm surprised no one has said the basics: Acrimonia (Dreams, best jazz metal instrumental ever in my opinion), Esicastic (very much like cynic), Alarum, Cause for Effect (grind jazz, but actual truer to jazz, not the stuff that people call jazz because it is technical. If you want to call technical death metal "jazz", I can name 50 bands from my cd collection at least. Slob on my transmutational knob you degenerates), Mourning Sign, Vuvr, and if you like jazzy stuff just listen to Jaco Pastorius, Bootsy Collins, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten, Aghora, or anything like that. A horrible wanna be jazz grind band is Nyia. Don't ever listen to them please. I wasted $5.99 on Heads Held High and I would have rather purchased a japanese bondage tea garden video than listened to that bullshit. Nyia and Peter North should do a porno.

Gordian Knot, they are awesome but they are not death metal. Kind of like prog/jazz metal. Spastic Ink is also a good one, songs like Mosquito Brain Surgery have some great jazz parts. Also check out Pestilence like everyone else said, especially the album "Spheres," some great bass work from Jeroen Paul Thesseling. And of course Cynic and Atheist.

Yeah I like Gordian Knot. Aghora is much better though. I have the self-titled Gordian Knot album... tracks 2,3,5,6,7 are good. The rest is slow-paced, Eastern European/Arabian handjob-giving poppycock. At least Aghora plays all the way through. Spastic Ink, Behold the Arctopus, etc. are pretty much just technical progressive metal. It's good, but it's not jazz. I have heard some jazz interludes in the band Coprofago btw.

How no one can even mention the almighty Exit-13 is beyond me. Also:
Death's Head Quartet
Pain Killer
Naked City

and someone mentioned Cause For Effect. They are fucking genius.

No. I don't think they are at all Jazz. Luke says the Jazz in Sleep Terror is "free" styled jazz, which just mean, look at me, I have a clean channle and can play 7th chords behind clean runs.

Martyr is the greatest band ever. Dan Mongrain is currently in his 3rd year of studying Jazz interpretation at college.

come on elements was awesome. I do agree with you on Focus though. One of my all time favorites.

I hear Rush in Atheist, especially with the way pentatonics are used.

Take pity.

Please don't get freaked out by what I'm about to ask for; I'd like to know if anyone could point out a easy place to download some songs of these bands you have been mentioning (a metal hub or ftp would be amazing)?
I assume that most of you are zealous fans and don't appreciate me trying to ripp off your favourite artists. I, however, feel my plea is justified because (as my extra "u" used above may indicate) I am not from your country. This being, I just can't afford to start showering Amazon or the likes with my South African Rands for music I've never heard on the off chance that the imported cd actually gets to me.

So please help me out here, and let me (1 of at max 500 real fucking metalheads in this country) spread our gospel to a savage nation of people who's idea of metal is disturbed or to some even (and I am sorry to taint your fine forumn with such filth) linkin park.

You owe it to humanity!

Just got atheist through soulseek (thanks cunt; quite funny how often i've actually said that), and they shred fucking ass man. You've made a believer out of me. Particularly impressed by the clarity of the percussion. Definitely inspired me to explore this genre properly. Fucking A guys. Also, I generally think smiley's are a little queer, but couldn't help loving this little dude's spirit.
