counting notes --- Triplettes

if i was in a progression of 4/4 and I had a triplette how would I be able to fit the rest of the measure?

basically like, if you have a half note that takes up half of the measure. a whole note takes up the whole. but what does a triplette take?

whats the count on the triplettes?
8th notes-3 notes-1 beat
16th notes-3 notes-1/2 beat
32nd notes-3 notes-1/4 beat

a triplet is just a word for 3 notes together so its not an actual time value or something. a triplet can take up anything like a whole measure of 4/4 or just 1 beat of 4/4.

say you were playing eighth notes in a 4/4 bar. lets say beat four is eighth note triplets, you would count:

1--&--2--&--3--&--4-a-let then.... 1--&....etc.

triplets

a triplet is worth 3 notes per beat. hence in 4/4 time youd have 4 triplets for a total of 12 notes per measure. you can count them out like so: 1 and uh 2 and uh 3 and uh 4 and uh...or if you prefer trip- a-let trip-a-let, etc..\

4 1 + uh 2 + uh 3 + uh 4 + uh

practice it slow til you get the timing down and youll be suprised how quickly youll be shredding triplets all over the place
ps good example of a triplet feel in 4/4 is lamb of gods "laid to rest"

i should have mentioned what i just covered was for eighth note triplets, if a song calls for a sixteenth note triplet play em twice as fast, 32nd notes?twice as fast as sixteenth, etc. hope this helps a little.

assuming long as you have 3 notes. You could also have multiple types of notes as long as it adds up to the corrrect amount. for example intstead of having 3 triplet 8th notes you could have one 8th note and one quarter (equaling the missing two eighths) made into a triplet, this particular example is basically how jazz eights are formed.

u can count them by using sylables(not spelled right)
for example
8ths you can say 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and
16ths you can say 1 e and 2 e and 3 e and 4 e and
32ths you can say 1 e and a 2 e and a 3 e and a 4 e and a
triplets you can say tri-pl-et
tuplets you can say tu-pu-le-t
and so on

It depends on the type of triplet.

3 halfnote triplets to a bar
6 quarternote triplets to a bar
12 eighth note triplets to a bar
24 sixteenth note triplets to a bar.

A good way to count triplets is with a three syllable word when playing them. For example eve-n-ly So if I was playing a bar of 4/4 using 8th note triplets I'd count them Eve-n-ly, eve-n-ly, eve-n-ly, eve-n-ly. make sure the Eve falls on the down beats of the bar (1,2,3,4) and the others will fall into place.

I also know guys who count 1-trip-let, 2-trip-let etc....

Your question depends on the value of notes used in the triplet.

A simple lesson (attached - Power Tabs).

There is an advancement in the Guitar Notes section.

p.s.
This examples are given if only one triplet was used per bar - it should give rough examples as to the duration of the triplet

I think you might be mistakenly thinking that a triplet is a singular note, such as a quarter note, or an eigth note.

A triplet is when you take 3 notes and compress them into the time that 2 notes would normally take. When you say 'triplet', you are referring to a group of notes, not just one note.

With one note alone having a triplet value you cannot logically complete the measure until you complete the triplet.
