Tabs shouldnt be that difficult to read. Just look at them and play what they say. Start the songs out slow and just get them down first. When i learn a song, i learn it in sections. Like 30 second sections or whatever.

For the cymbals, you could just ignore them for now and hit the hi-hat for every cymbal note. As stated before, Iron Man by Black Sabbath. Ummm, Back in Black by AC/DC? idk. Burzum? You could find some simple stuff in your cd collection and play along.

you have an 8 peice and you have just started learning?!?
I think it is more likely you aren't counting right, remember when reffering to peices of a kit you do not count your cymbals!
as for songs, metallica is good when you get a little more advanced, drum tutors are worth their weight in gold, and bands and jamming really helps you with things like timming and being creative.

I didnt even think about learning a song when i first started out. I just got the basics down, got a teacher and went from there.I would suggests getting a teacher or some drum videos, books, and magazines before you learn a song.

When you are first starting i highly suggest (1) Getting a drum teacher, (2) dont learn any songs at first, when learning drums songs are the last thing you need to concentrate on, (3) start out slow and pratice one beat over and over (with a metronome) to get your timing down (timing is the most important thing when playing drums) (4) once you have a couple of beats down start adding simple fills and go from there.
Dont be worrying about learning songs unless your in a band, once you get good enough you can start adding you own beats and fills in songs and to me thats what makes a real drummer.
I hope some of that made sense.

remember with all the hard work you put into drumming just to sit down nd relax and play for fun, sometimes people get so worked up and serious about being the next (insert your personal drumming god in here) just remember to play for fun often
