Unfortunately, the English language has been in decline for years and the over-use and misuse of the word 'like' is just one of many symptoms. I've noticed that when 'like' is used inappropriately, it is usually accompanied by a strange form of facial tic: the orator will often do this weird eye movement whereby their eyes disappear into their (empty) heads after a rapid left-right motion. The head also mimics the initial left-right motion of the eyes. Irritating to say the least.

It's almost as if these people are simpletons who have to interject with 'like' to allow their feeble brain to catch up with what is being unleashed from their mouths. Forget IQ tests and all that scientific psychology: to determine somebodies inherent lack of intelligence we should, from now on, adopt the 'like-per-minute' rating. Obviously, the higher the score, the more dimwitted the subject is.

i've always felt the over-use of "like" indicates a person's lack of clarity of thought...and ofcourse, in a country like india, peoples' inability to speak their mind in english

Of course it annoys the hell out of me, but it makes me wonder: Is this just the english language evolving? (well maybe not in the right direction, but you know what I mean) Do you think that people of 500 years ago would look down or be disgusted at the way we speak today, with our general conversation lacking the likes of "thou", "thy", and other words like that? Who knows, maybe in 500 years from now english will be much simpler, a bit like in "Nineteen Eighty-Four"....... and they'll laugh at the funny overcomplicated way we speak today.....hmmmmm

Anyways, (oh geez! That's one I do a lot especially when I write.) ...I'm quite guilty of the latter fact in that article with the up-swings on statements. Even thinking of what I just wrote I caught myself doing it. It's just an insecurity ingrained that has to be unlearned in my particular case. It's probably the same insecurity as the one I have about playing guitar or singing solo in front of anyone. I'm learning to overcome at least one of those by singing to whomever asks me on the net. It has gotten easier. I sang for Pandemonium once although he never asked me to do it again!

That was a cool little article unlike the one I just read about Dimebag by some schmuck whose eyeballs I'd like to poke about now.

I'm actually a little guilty of doing this. I use the word "like" pretty much, I don't overuse it or anything but still.

All it means is that you need to take a communications course (no offense). They try to teach you how to write, memorize, and say a speech without saying "like," "uh," "umm" or any other pause or sound that doesn't happen to be a word. After I took it I still did it, but it's better than it was before.

I think that I say like quite a bit in my normal dialect, when I'm talking a lot. Honestly though, I think I say "fuck" or "fucking" more than I say like, and not for effect, just because that's about how everyone talks in the navy, at least most of the people who I've been around.

yea, I use the word "andskotinn" probably most by far, it means "the devil" but it's used the same way as "fuck" is in english.

when im singing death metal with my band just for a feeling of power I will insert "fucking" in between verbs and nouns...I don't know, it feels more accurate.

I think the abuse of the word "like" can't just be classified as a word overused by feeble teenagers. I thought about exactly why I hear this word so much and this is what I've come up with:

Almost all of us interrupt our verbal communication process with either a pause, a thinking sound (ex: "uuh"), a scratching, etc. that gives us a brief period for our minds to contemplate or revaluate what is being discussed upon. The word "like" is something thats socially learned and drilled into the more "moldable" teenage mind and is then naturally inserted into this interval to connect thoughts, keep the listener's attention, and express that this person has adopted this word to show that they are a subject of impression. I don't think that someone who uses this word is unintelligent but moreover, is, more susceptible to consuming meaningless outside stimulus without contrasting it with reason.

Either way, it really is a uphill battle trying to have a conversation with someone whos victum to this "virus" and it is a battle I expierence everyday.

In case anyone gives a shit, in the Japanese language its acutally considered good to use words like that (um, er, like, y'know but japanese versions) when you can't think of something to say. They have a whole bunch, its almost like another alphabet. And they already have three alphabets.
