I have a Zoom Hyper Lead HL-01. I get a pretty decent sound out of it

I had an older zoom 505, bout a 01 model, it was more box like than the newer shapes, had sick distortion when I tuned it right, but it gradually started screwin up and just the other week died, so I got a DOD, I reckon it's sweet, just gotta muck around shitloads.

If you get a tube amp of some sort, and find that it's not gainy enough, what would be the best way to boost it? I'm not into racks and preamps and stuff, I'm more of just like a simple overdrive pedal and graphic eq type of guy. So what would be the best way to boost the gain and all, let's just say as an example if I were to get like a Crate BV or like a Marshall DSL100 or something like that.

The best way is to mod the amp. Outside of that you would have to preamp it or boost it on the effects loop. They make simple preamp pedals.

You could get it moded, but you'd probably want some colorless gain, like you said, an graphic eq would do the job, or you could get an tube screamer (but their way overpriced)

Line 6 Uber Metal pedal. I love this pedal. It puts the Metal Zone to retirement. You can get a nice Iron Maiden sound and a pounding Suffocation tone no matter what your setup is. A little tweaking is all it takes. I'm so addicted to this piece of fine gadgetry.

personally i think those line 6 single effect stomp boxes are pretty bad ass, the echo one especially.
but imo those distortions are just the same old metalzone, death metal, grunge, metal master, ect... style stomp boxes that are only acceptable if you're playing on a little practice amp at low volumes.
but then again i'm spoiled in tone.

Yeah, well multi-fx these days can give you a nice tone if your not used to much on an overdriven tube amp like let's say, an ENGL powerball?
The only people noticing the difference between authentic tube tone and a tube moddeler are musicians.. people in the audience prolly won't notice..
multi-fx have a lot of functionality.. too bad the only thing they can't do is giving head

I will reply this one with a lot of respect for the ppl that suggested to move on to a better amp because of the dist channel and blah, blah, blah. Thanks really, but
1)I never had the money to afford an amp that can give me the gain that MT-2 gives or
2)it doesn't exist.
So I will replay based on my experience only.
I play metal since I'm 14-15 and I'm now 31 and still rocking. I always used MT-2 because it was simply the heaviest out there, giving the right heavy distortion. I've tried other distortions wihich build very solid, but they don't have that swedish death or norwegian black metal sound. It's more a Metallica or Korn metal sound which is different.
The problem with MT-2 is that if you play very loud it gives a lot of feedback and u have to be careful to have either ur hand on ur guitar or turn the volume knob on ur guitar down if u want to be quiet.
I play with Laney MXD120 Amp and Laney HCM412A 4x12 Cabinet and still, if I go high loud I get a lot of noise and feedback.
I tried another rocktron pedal called Rampage at a friend's rehearsal room. She doesn't play metal, but we put MT-2 and rampage together just to hear the diff. She told me it was a much more powerful and quieter (i.e. less noisy) dist, and wow, I agreed. No noise while playing very loud.
So I went to the shop and asked for this Rocktron dist pedal, that I didn't remember the name but was looking like this, like that. The point is that the guy from the shop got a dist pedal from Rocktron and called me saying that he had something.
By mistake he got Metal Planet instead of Rampage. Honestly I was a bit skeptic about it since it had exactly the same controls as MT-2 so I thought it may be just a bad copy ... but I gave it a try. I took my guitar with me (Schecter Damien-7) and played on the thing.
I must say, I was SO amazed by that pedal. It's a really impressive pedal. Honestly, I still smile when I play on it. And the best is - as long as u use a battery - that u can play really loud without having any noises, or feedback or crap. I'm really happy with it. It's a very angry pedal. Very thick, deep, distortion. I don't even use a compressor. When I plug it to an ac source it buzzes a bit though, but that might be the power supply I'm using. Anyway, I use to use batteries most of the time.
So, for the price, if u wanna move from MT-2 to Metal Planet, I would definately say go on. I've been playing on Metal Planet for about 2 months now and am very very happy with it. I think Rocktron took Mt-2 and made it better, much better.

You're a bit hard to please if you want both norwegian black metal ( single coil strat->fuzz pedal->fuzz pedal->fuzz pedal->fuzz pedal->marshall with master volume at 1) and the swedish death sound, i.e. 5150. To do that you at least need an amp with at least parametric mids and an active EQ, and a lot of distortion, which both the MT-2 and the Metal Planet does, but not so many amplifiers. An EQ in the loop will do it too.
If you like that rocktron pedal check out their piranha preamp, it's been discontinued, but goes for ultra cheap. 99 presets w/MIDI control, active bass / middle / mid freq. / treble, tube distortion, no 60hz hum, built-in noise gate (which works fairly well), etc. I did a raving review of it, it's very nice. Triaxis killer.
