id go with a pearl export or a tama rockstar or a yamaha stage custom(of which i own and it fucken kicks ass) and those kits will take you to about 8-900 bucks...unless your looking for someone who isnt sure if they want to play or not, theres some cheep-o kits out there

Well,
I'm sure I wanna play. I do play all the time on my bros kit. I just want something more affordable but still has a decent amount of quality in comparison. Any more recommendations? Are the low ball yahama kits decent? How about pearl forums? Those aren't too high. What about CB drums? Anyone ever heard/played those?

the new low class yamaha arent the worst, like the ryden kit (i think its called), and the pearl forums are pretty good for what your looking for.
1. are you looking to play in a band
2. how much money are you willing to spend

Cool! Getting help!
Yes, I'm wanting to play in a band. Thrash, melodic, and death style music. I would like to keep it around $300 low end to $500 high end, but am willing to make trade-offs if a particular kit comes with cymbals, or other equipment others kits might not come with. I was looking at the Tama Swingstar Kit since it comes equipped with a cymbal pack. Is it worth paying extra for stock cymbals? I wasn't wanting to pay that much, but prob once I get a kit and buy cymbals it will be around that price. I also know the pearl forum kit comes with a crash/ride and hi-hat. Then I see those low end yahamas which run around $400, which if I wait till musiciansfriend throws the deal, I can get a free cymbal pack for those as well. So it mainly comes down to quality, sound, and durability of the drums in my price range. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Which if I buy standalone cymbals, I'm just gonna buy like the cheapest ZBT zildjians there are. I'm still a beginner. So what would you get personally rabbifoodslicer? Tama Swingstar? Pearl Forums? Yahama Rydeen? Other? Putting yourself in my shoes/price range. Also do the number of plys directly relate to a better sound quality? deeper sound? richer sound? What are some of the better woods suited for metal style and sound of music?

ok. i dont really know anyone personally where a low budget TAMA has worked out for them...they usually go and buy another kit in a year or two. but if someone says other wise, i dont know too much about tamas.
Pearl Forum Fusion 5-Piece Set
this gets you the kit the cymbals, sticks, it says it all in the link.
Yamaha Rydeen 5-Piece Drum
this will get you just the drums and a piece or two of hardware. but most of the yamaha drums ive played on all have the same durability and quality, be it high or low end. (obviously the high end will be better)
analysis: just starting, dont want to spend too much money, go with the pearl. you get the whole package. the yamaha will set you up a few more bucks and the tama (to me) is shit. and in a year or two you will have bought some cymbals and stands and shit, and then you can save up for some better drums.
so do what you will with it.
