Hes probably talking about catagories... In which this thread would fall into the wrong catagory, being in the "bands" and all.
I take it that you dont like catagories/genres Josh Smith. "Fuck Genres". I personally dont have a problem with them. Everything else falls into catagories, so why shouldnt music. It sure is helpful when your looking for bands. For ex. if you were to look up a band for the first time and see that it was labled as punk, and you knew that you didnt like punk, you could easily save time and not proceed. Thats not even a good example... But then again, you havent exactly explained what it is you dislike about genres so I cant really reply to well. As for me, genres help. If i were looking up a band and it fell under viking metal, I would be damn sure to give it a listen. Sometimes i find that bands fall into a different genre than i would put them in, but its not that big of a deal. What is it you dont like anyway?...

If you are telling your friend about a band and they are like "What kind of music do they play?" it's easier to say punk or metal and they will get the point. Nothing wrong with that.

i only do the major divisions (death, black, power). but if somthing inside those divisions sound different enough, i'll use a new sub-genre (melodic death inside death to give an example).
that's it.

nothing wrong with genres, but rating a band before you hear them just because of their genre is a bit stupid, as is thinking "My genre's better than your genre" - genres are made for people's tastes, and if you dont like a certain genre, remember that other people may.

I like the genre system. There just needs to be more unity to it, people just make genres when they cant think of one that theyre bands music fits. It gives poeple a more sense of what type of music it is, not just plain metal. Metal in one mans opinion could be guys in spandex with big girly hair running around on stage talking about sex with 5 min solos and neon guitars, while others could be thinking of insane riffs, blast beats, and unholy growls. It helpd people desipher who you are.

genres in music is understandable (but can venture into the extreme. Just ask for all the genres of metal).
The same goes for genres of books, games, etc.
But genres of social stature are just signs of insecurity.

i guess its not necessarily music genres in general that i hate its more how people abuse them. Pisses me off when people call a band a "poser" because they are "trying" to be a genre. Who said the band was trying? They are just being themselves and yet they are posers.
Also when people are afraid to like a band because they are in a genre that is looked down upon.

They're good for trying something new. For example: Let's say someone wanted to mix three-chord punk with black metal vocals or something. Seeing since noone would know what to call it people would just sub-divide it into something like "Black-punk" or whatever. So they are good. Keep em.

If you've ever tried writing a serious music review without a single appeal to something genre-related, you'll understand how hard communication in words about music is. Describing music is inevitably comparative, especially when you do a lot of it. Say you reviewed three middle-tier death metal bands all at the same time, and they all sound the same, and derivative. What are your options?
(Of course any good reviewer will have to go much further, and talk both in and out of genre/context.)
In conclusion, they're only genuinely annoying when stupid teenagers on the internet throw them around like Nerf footballs.
I will support genres until something is officially classified as "self-manipulation-core". Then, all bets are off.
