i would say opeth, nobody before or after them has done what they are doing, they may have influences on they're style, but they are unique all the same

Cacophony for their technicality, odd "out there" guitar riffs which are incredible. I havent heard anything like it

Quo Vadis for being damn fast with their guitar riffs.

Dripping. Who else incorporates J-Pop and Gangster Rap samples into brutal death metal? And by "brutal", I mean Devourment "brutal".
Cephalectomy also. They are like.. Cryptopsy on acid.

Definately Sepultura, their insanely fast guitar riffs, and solos that they came up with on their own. I love Children oF Bodom but all their riffs are from Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden

Ya children of bodom i find are quite orginal. They seem to mix neoclassical music with the whole metal deal. They have great guitar riffs

Yep gotta love COB, all i was saying was that thier guitar riffs arent original, but they were one of the first bands to mix neo classical with the metal sound and feel to create one after another heart pounding album.
I believe anal cunt deservers some respect here because of their originality
who else would think of a song called "I snuck a retard into a sperm bank"
or "I gave your kid aids so you could watch it die"
They are BRILLIANT!!!

That reminds me of a question that's been on my mind. What is the name of the genre of music that those opera-style vocals are usually with? It's a type of opera, but Im not sure what the exact name is.

I really don't think they were the first band to do that... I could not name the first one but I'm sure it's not COB.

I believe it is entitled "Operatic metal" or "Classical metal"
Some original metal bands i can contribute are:
Opeth
Therion
Dream Theater
Nightwish
