(european) football fans

two questions:

who's going to win the Champions League?

and...

who's going to win the Euro Cup 2004?

i'll have to say FC Porto for the CL (for obvious reasons) and either England or France will take the Euro Cup this year.

not porto. man, even Ajax beat them ages ago lol probably the english again.

France will take the euro cup? no way. not right now, maybe if they get in shape soon.

maybe England though, they got the talent and all.

france sucked against holland last time, which was only a week ago, Holland hasn't been beaten the last 35 matches or something. they're in for revenge

france is a good team but not great, maybe they'll get in shape for the cup, but I don't think they'll win. I think England has a good shot, Italy/spain/portugal all haven't been what they used to be.

same goes for Germany allthough they've got a lot of upcoming talent for the next years...

Holland is still number 4 or something on the world ranking list, they've got something to prove right now, and I bet they'll get in the semi-finals or maybe even the finals. and then probably get beaten by england, haha.

Italy. naaaaah. have you seen them lately? they've been crap. like we where a couple of years ago with that other coach, dick advocate

PSV won from Auxerre with 3-0 haha that was cool, but they prolly won't win the UEFA cup.

as for the CL... probably some english club. Real is a shit club, they just bought the world's best players and put them in a team. they got the highest budget and thats all, they don't play all too well as a team but they've got the best players thats for sure...

I think that if Gerrard, Owen, Beckham and Campbell are all fit and in form that England can win Euro 2004. England's weak point is the 'keeper, David James. He's almost guaranteed to make at least one major mistake per game.

Other than England I think Spain might finally realise their potential. I wasn't that impressed with Portugal when England played a couple of months ago. Also, you can never count out Germany - they always seem to play well in tournaments despite being dodgy in qualifying *cough* 5-1 *cough*. But I feel that France will always be a tough game for anyone, especially with Thierry Henry playing out of his skin at the moment, and shouldn't be overlooked.

Champions League? I thought before last night (Chelsea got beat 3-1 by Monaco) that the final would be contested between Porto and Chelsea. It's a little more difficult to back Chelsea now, but I still think they'll make it through. Actually, if Chelsea beat Monaco I'd fancy them to win in the final also.

UEFA Cup? Valencia or Newcastle. Newcastle will do what my club, Liverpool (sob, sob), couldn't and beat Marseilles. I think they'll meet Valencia in the final but if I had to choose I'd probably say Valencia would be too strong for them.

It's definitely within their powers, but I'd fancy Monaco maybe to score at Stamford Bridge. If Monaco don't score then I think Chelsea will go through to the final with a 2 or 3 goal display.

If you're a betting man, bet on the Chelsea game having between 2 and 3 goals: you should get odds of around 7-4 for that. Pair that up with between 0 and 1 goal (around 9-4 odds) in the Porto-Deportivo game for a 9-1 double timer. Just don't put your mortgage on it...

Did anyone see Makalele's dive to get the Monaco player (the Greek fella - can't remember his name, Vikos or something) sent off? He's a disgrace, a cheat and most of all, a fairy.

The sending off in the Porto-Depor game was a joke too. Andrade (Deportivo) only tapped Deco (as he (Deco) was getting up from the ground) with his foot and the ref sent him off. Fair play to Deco though, he didn't go rolling on the ground. To be honest, Deco looked like he didn't even notice it and just wanted to get on with taking the free kick. Some referees are complete imbeciles.

His name is Zikos.
As for Andrade I think the ref did good to sent him off.

I think(hope) Porto will take the CL.

I also have 2 bets going for Euro : one for Potugal
to win Hellas on the first match and one that Portugal will
win it.

Really what team do you people support in your countries?
Do you go to see your team often?
I support PAOK and next year we will be playing in the
CL for the first time!I'll certainly go to see
a match at an other country

Zikos! I knew it was something like that!

Portugal might be good bets to win Euro 2004, especially since they have home advantage. Greece have a good team but I'd fancy Portugal to beat them.

I support the mighty (if I keep saying it, it might come true once again!) Liverpool - the most successful club in the history of English football. We used to rule the roost in Europe back in the late 70's and early 80's, winning 4 European Cups in 7 years. Yes, Man Utd fans, FOUR!

Anyway I've had a season ticket in the Kop that I've shared with my brother (It was nigh on impossible to get 3 season tickets under the Dad's and lads scheme when we first got them) for the past 9 years. I've not seen too many good times in the last 9 years (2001 being the exception) but I'm hoping the halcyon days are not lost forever...

even worst, Deco and Andrade played in Porto for years. they are extremely good friends and if you noticed well, Andrade said to the referee "he is my friend!"

Ten Ton Alien: Yeah, I saw that as well. The referee was wrong, it was just a playful tap. Even a yellow card would have been harsh. It's a shame because a straight red is usually a 3 match ban, which would rule Andrade out of the final if Deportivo make it through. He could miss one of the biggest games of his career just because of a card-happy referee who's probably never even played football at professional level.

Manchester United 0 - 1 Liverpool

YOU FUCKING BEAUTY!

I love seeing A**x F**g*son scowl! He looked like he was chewing a wasp after Danny Murphy scored the penalty. I was absolutely ecstatic when I saw it was G**y N*v*lle who gave away the penalty. I hate that man with every ounce of flesh in my body. Arrogant bastard.

Def: Don't write the Germans off too soon. Everyone said they were going to be awful in the last World Cup but they still got to the final. They've got a crap team on paper, but the sum of their parts seems to be greater than anyone ever expects.

Or maybe they're just jammy bastards!

Sports, to me, represent an inability to participate and excel in activities that a male finds enjoyable. Watching sports fills the gap for guys that, in short, are athletically incapable. That's just my opinion. What's the point of WATCHING it when you could be PLAYING it?

I don't agree with that cause I don't like to play football
anyway , I like going to the stadium and support my team.
And you participate by yelling at the stadium or
even throwing stones to your opponents and
beating them(civilised stuff that
promote culture,you know )

Oh, yes, that's real civilized. Why don't you just go to a bar? If that truly is your goal... Then you would be getting the same thing accomplished drinking beer. Oh wait, that's right... Bars have TV's in them a lot of the time... Well... throw rocks at the TV.

It's useless, the TV will never bleed!
Besides if I am in a bar how could I support
my team from a distance(that's the main goal)?
And you can drink just before you go to
the stadium and then when you're inside
smoke some pot

The TV may not bleed... But it can BREAK. And fuck pot. Marlboro Red's all the way... And the pigs can't do shit about cigarettes. As for "supporting your team", do you really need to? You aren't a bra.

I like Lucky Strike better than Marlboro man.And cops usually don't
do anything about pot too.
Don't take everything I said for serious,I'm against
violence.I just like to go to the stadium and yell
for my team. You can't say that doing that is pointless
if you like doing it and have a good time. It's the same as music:
Why do you hear music?Because you like to right?
So it's not pointless for you even if it is for someone else

EDIT:What the hell is bra?

What's the point of going to see a band when you could be performing yourself?
What's the point of viewing art when you could be creating it yourself?
What's the point of reading when you could be writing yourself?
What's the point of watching films when you could be making them yourself?

In short, because it's enjoyable. The same goes for sport.

You're entitled to your opinion but since you admit that you hate sports, I think you'll find it would be logical of you not to post in a football thread for football fans. Unless you purposely want to be antagonistic, that is. Illogical or antagonistic? Delete where not applicable.

Arsenal clinched the Premiership title this weekend and they are three games away from going down in history as the only team to go unbeaten in an English 38 game domestic season. Preston went unbeaten in 1898-99 but it was only an 18 game season back then.

If they do it, it will be an amazing feat. Even the Man Utd team of the 90s and the Liverpool teams of the 70s and 80s could not go unbeaten for a whole season (Notts Forest went 42 games without defeat - still a record - but it was spread over two seasons).

But I have a question. If Arsenal do go unbeaten in the domestic league, does that make them one of the greatest teams ever despite not winning the European Cup?

My own personal view is that for this Arsenal side - stylish though it may be - to be consider one of the greatest sides of all time they have to win the European Cup at some stage. Europeans can never forget great sides such as the Real Madrid team of the 60s, the Ajax, Bayern and Liverpool teams of the 70s and the Milan and Juve sides of the 90s. But if Arsenal fail to win the European Cup, will they be forgotten along with the likes of Brugges and Borussia Moenchengladbach?

I ask these questions because I'm interested to see if domestic success and an attractive style of play is sufficient enough for teams to go down in European footballing history.

I think noone will remember Arsenal as one of
the greatest teams if they don't win
the Champion's League or even the UEFA Cup.
Well they play good football though but Valencia
was also very good 2-3 years ago but didn't
manage to win the Champion's League
so they won't be remembered as a great team.

Anyone saw Holland- Greece yesterday?
I am happy we lost 4-0 ,everyone here
was thinking we had a good team but
now they're all disappointed. The best thing
about the game was the banner that some PAOK
fans from Solingen raised at the stadium! And some people
wearing PAOK shirts

fuckin Romania, of all teams... that was a devastating blow, especially when we look back at 2002 and Germany ended second in the World Cup.

Ehm, yeah ofcourse I saw it

anyways, holland played a lousy game, really, really bad compared to the last couple of duels, we've been unbeaten for like 25 games in a row (?) france and portugal didnt beat us at their homeplaces, hah.

but against greece it was shit, Kluivert played like ass and we didn't have our best players on the field, no Davids, no Robben, no van Nistelrooy, only Piere van Hooijdonk in the end who made a goal, the rest in there wasn't good at all, the first half was pathetic, then they made 3 goals in ten minutes and stopped playing again (oh, well, thats allways how it goes with holland) when van Hooijdonk came in he blasted the game open again for the last 10 minutes...

anyways, holland is out for revenge since they had a lot of near championships, mostly stranding against brazil or with bad luck against the french. a while ago they didnt have a good coach and didnt even qualify, how pathetic is that.

its good to see they're back up playing their game again, but its no-where as good as it was back in 94-96, but theres some time left before Euro 2004..

Greece was actually better then I expected, in the first half they didnt give away any opportunities, shame they don't have good forwards...

and Germany, haha they're fucked! our first real game for Euro 2004 is against Germany, if they play like this it will be total humiliation for them.

Hahahahahahahahaha! I laughed my fuckin' cock off when I saw that result! I wonder, when was the last time Germany suffered a 5-1 defeat? Hmmm, let me think... Michael Owen wasn't playing was he? Hehehe, sorry to all the Germans out there, I couldn't resist!

I think Germany play badly immediately before a tournament so as to make all the other teams dismiss them as rubbish. I still believe that Germany will always be a tough prospect when it comes to the important games. Write them off at your own peril!

We will see what Germany will do in the Euro 2004!

Yeah, maybe at half time the tournament organisers could get Rudi Voeller and Frank Rijkaard to continue their spitting match from the '90 World Cup! Now that's entertainment!

Yeah, I think so too. But I would be angry if Roy Makaay will shoot the goal, which decide the match.

don't worry about Makaay, he's probably not going to be in the base eleven at the start, I don't think he's our best forward either.

you guys have that new young kid, the blonde guy coming up, swein-something, he's gonna be the next best thing to come out of germany.

johnmansley, you're right about that, haha, people here are still pissed about losing against germany back then

That's one of my most vivid memories from that World Cup along with Stuart Pearce missing his penalty against Germany in the semi-finals!

I think that young German guy is Schweinsteiger. What about Deisler, is he going to be there? He was supposed to be the great hope of Germany in the last World Cup but he got injured beforehand.

yeah thats the guy, he's good.

we've got a lot of upcoming talent too though, especially Sneijder, van der Vaart, Robben, Heitinga.

then theres the obvious Kluivert, van Nistelrooy, Overmars, van Hooijdonk, Davids, Seedorf, Reiziger, Stam, etc. it's just a shame Bergkamp won't be here this time.

I dunno, we've got a pretty good team but we're just out of luck most of the time, like euro 2000 and others.

also I heard rumours about Cruyf and Van Basten to be coaching in the future, that would be ace. but I don't think Cruyf will ever do it.

I think Cruyf is too involved with Barcelona to go into coaching but there wouldn't be a striker in the world who couldn't learn a few things off Marco Van Basten. It was a shame that his career was cut short by injury.

There's a lot of Dutch talent coming through again. Out of the new guys Van der Vaart catches my eye the most but Robben is pretty good too. I'd like to see Van der Vaart in the Liverpool team but I think he'll go to Barcelona next season.

It looks like all the young rising stars of Dutch football are leaving to play abroad. Robben looks like he's joining Chelsea, Van Persie has already agreed to join Arsenal and it looks like Van der Vaart will leave too. I think this reflects how far Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord have fallen behind in terms of European standing - they just can't compete with the big money leagues of Spain, Italy and England. I even read somewhere that Ajax is to be a feeder club for an English side, Arsenal or Chelsea, I think. How the mighty have fallen.

yeah, its just the hard cash going on, but van der Vaart stated he wanted to stick by Ajax together with his friend Sneijder. I don't think he's going anywhere soon.

I don't think the teams have fallen behind, its just the money behind the teams, talent enough but not money apperently, dutch teams can't hold on to their players because they get bought by rich foreign clubs. holland seems to be a breeding pool for talent, shame we don't keep it around long enough to enjoy it.

Yeah, the Dutch acadamies are probably, if not, the best acadamies in the world for producing top class talent. There are many, many great Dutch players in the world at the moment but it's a little puzzling how they always seem to underperform in major championships.

yeah, they allways mess up so the motherland's clubs may have a chance

and the national team, meh, they don't fuck up often, its mostly the case of bad luck and a lot of injuries... van persie played well today for Feyenoord, Kezman played excellent for PSV, which will go into europe with Ajax. Feyenoord is down the drain, but I don't care for that club, so fuck it.

Hahahaha!

What team do you support, Def?

I feel sorry for PSV fans who want Vennegoor Of Hesselink on the back of their shirts! Getting the name printed probably costs more than the shirt itself!

haha, yeah it looks weird on his own shirt too

theres some other really weird names out there, but vennegoor of hesselink spans the crown hehe.

hm, I support utrecht and Ajax, utrecht because I study there and a girl I know has a clubcard so I can go to every game she goes too, Ajax because they're the best club we've had all over the years, however they just got outta the shitter themselves.
somehow they manage to climb back up again after all kinds of shit, they sell their best players and after a couple of months they allready got some new stars from their yougth-crew, which is pretty amazing.

PSV has been doing well too lately, like that game against Auxerre and shit, after that they missed Vogel and Robben, which fucked them up, injuries really weakened them, but they didn't do all too bad I guess. Ajax is winning the competition again, Utrecht isnt a super-team or anything but they are amusing to watch, they had some really neat players out there, most of them have been sold though, to bigger teams and foreign teams. my favorite was Stijn Vreven, but he was sold last year.

did you see Barcelona by any chance? its like 60% of our national team, van Bronckhorst, Kluivert, Davids, Reiziger, Cocu, haha, and they played a nice game, not superb, but it was some damn attractive soccer, that kid, Ronaldinho definetly had some great moments together with van Bronckhorst. oh, the coach is also Rijkaard, but you prolly know that. Real is in the shit, I hope Barca wins the league, I visited Camp Nou (barca's home stadium) once, it was one big ass johan cruyf temple.

Yeah, Barcelona has fallen in love with the Dutch ever since Cruyf was there in the 70's. I remember a few years back when Van Gaal was manager and the fans were complaining that there were too many Dutch players at the club!

I remember when Liverpool lost 3-1 at home to Barcelona in the Champions League a few years back. I've never seen a better all round performance from a striker than I did that day from Patrick Kluivert. He was awesome, as were Barcelona. They've fallen on a few hard times over the last couple of seasons but it looks like Barca are coming back strong - especially now that Ronaldinho is playing out of his skin. They've got some good young players there too along with the experienced Dutch guys and I hope they win the league. It's going to be close between them, Valencia and Real but I've got a feeling that Valencia will just pip them at the post.

yeah, I think Real will lose it though, they've been playing crap lately.

and that team is just a load of money on a field, its not even a real team, kinda lame IMO.

at Barca, they had the son of Cruyf on the bench (the other team) but they didnt bring him in, to spare him the humiliation, also Cruyf Jr. seemed to enjoy Barca's playing, he chatted with Rijkaard a bit too, lol. he's a great guy, allways gets ovations when he gets on the field, he doesn't want to live of his dad's fame so he lets everyone call him Jordy instead.

Van Gaal, beh, I don't really like him, though he did do a lot for the competition here, I hope Van Basten will coach the new Ajax or national team someday, he would be an excellent coach.

I especially enjoy games against the english or scottisch teams, they come to Amsterdam and go apeshit, its really amusing, the scottisch are super-friendly too, last time they played I drank a couple of beers with those lads, love em.
The english has two camps, the friendly guys and the guys who just come out to fight and make trouble, which is pretty sad.

as for Kluivert, he's been injured for a while, but he's a good forward, still the best payed player in Barca!! in our national team he's not that special, because we've got more good forwards. and now the young kids are getting a shot, which is neat, first show of the new kids was against scotland, what was it, 6-0 or something

I feel ashamed to be English when I see those mindless hooligans on TV - Euro 2000 in Charleroi springs to mind. They ruin it for everyone else just so they can test how hard they are against the rest of Europe. They only drag their knuckles off the floor to smash a pint glass over someone's head. Idiots, nothing but idiots, but unless UEFA does something really radical (not very likely) they will keep on doing it. It pains me to say it, but it might take England being banned from a major tournament in order for the problem to be sorted out.

On a lighter note, I especially enjoyed the 6-0 win for Holland over Scotland. The Scots hate England with a passion so it's always good to see them crying after another humiliation!

haha, yeah I've heard that from the Scottish, I recall hearing something like 'those english sheep-fakkers' in a weird accent,

also they said the ass-end of the world is wales. haha, thats true though, I've been there and it was shit.

Scotland's team really plays like they should, they never do really give up, which is funny, if you look at those braveheart movies, its the same, they're allready dead but hell, they'll throw in a fight!

Hahaha, that is so true. No talent but at least they put some effort in! They know their geography too, Wales is the arse-end of the world! Reminds me of a couple of jokes:

Q: What do you call two sheep tied to a lamp post in Wales?
A: A brothel.

Q: What do you call a Welsh farmer with more than one sheep?
A: A pimp.

(Very) old, but classic!

Yeah, I hope so, he's a great player. He's the sort of player we need at the moment and I think he'd compliment Owen terrifically. I don't know how he'd fit in to the team with Djibril Cisse of Auxerre coming in the summer though. Maybe he'd have to settle for a place on the bench but I guess that wouldn't be a good career move for him!

I saw the Porto game last night and over the two legs I thought they deserved to go through. Collina missed an elbowing though and that has had an effect on the game. I'm not bothered by it though as I was hoping for Porto to go through as they are more entertaining.

I've still got a feeling that they'll meet Chelsea in the final. I fancy a 2-0 win for them tonight. I think we'll get an entertaining final regardless of who goes through so it doesn't really matter, but I'm still going to support the English team (this doesn't apply to Man Utd in any situation!).

I hope you didn't bet on Chelsea yesterday.
Why so much hatred for Man Utd?

Luckily I didn't bet on them. Phew! I should have bet on the Porto-Depor game having 0-1 goals though...

There has always been a rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester over the last couple of hundred years mainly due to the close proximity of our two cities (about 35 miles apart). This just carried on into the sporting arena, but especially since Alex Ferguson has been manager.

There are not many neutrals in England who don't hate Man Utd and it's nothing to do with jealousy - we hated them when they were in the old second division and not winning a thing. From top to bottom they are a very arrogant club (they usually say that they are still the best team despite not winning the league) and their English fans are insufferably smug. This doesn't go down too well with the rest of the country, especially Scousers like me!

Hahaha! Even Franz Beckenbaur said that watching Bayern is boring!

Anyway, I have a solid example of why everyone hates Man Utd. A**x F******n was asked whether he was envious of Arsenal and his reply was:

"What Arsenal achieve this season doesn't bother me. I think it's more important that you create your own history. We were the first team to go into Europe, the first English team to win the European Cup, the first to win the treble and the first to win three doubles."

Now tell me that those aren't the words of a bitter and jealous man in charge of an arrogant and self important club.

he's going down in quality yeah.

but what about Waterreus (PSV) he messed up their chances!!!!

so now he's quitting. I don't think he'll make a comeback either. but its kinda sad for him though.

edwin van der sar has been doing great for ages, at least we have one keeper thats allways ready when needed (did anyone see his coming out of the goal and outplaying an greece forward?)

He tried to do that against Arsenal at the weekend but Jose Reyes was too quick for him and slotted the ball into an empty net. It was like taking candy from a baby. But yeah, I like Van der Sar, he's a good 'keeper. He's much better than Oliver Khan now but Khan was top quality when he was in his prime. By the way, don't even ask about David James...

They'd probably beat Liverpool!

We're in 4th place though with 1 game to go so, barring some freaky results, it looks like we'll be in the hat for the Champion's League qualifiers next season. I'll be glad when the season's finally over as it's been a very torturous and infuriating season for us poor Reds supporters!

lol, reminds me of Seaman, I don't get it, why did they leave him in the goal for that long? he's not a superb keeper imo, they left him there too long.

I dunno, Kahn isn't super either, my favorite goalie was Schmeigel or how the hell do you write it and Lama from the french used to be really good.

that keeper for Barca has some good actions too, but he's too nervous with the ball, but hey, he's still young and learning. Barca has been doing well lately (but not last game.) ah well.

Yeah Schmeichel was the best goalkeeper ever , I also like
Campos (when he used to play) and Higgita .
The best young goalkeeper now I think is Iker Casillias .

Yeah, Casillas is pretty good but the best goalkeeper I have ever seen was Neville Southall. He used to play for Everton but you continental folk may not have heard of him due to the English ban from Europe and also because he used to play for Wales!

Barthez is a joke. He made many mistakes at Man Utd (to my delight) and he always looked like a poor man's version of Bruce Grobbelaar. Brucie was a clown at times, but he was still a fantastic 'keeper - better than Barthez. Oh by the way, Bruce Grobbelaar played for Liverpool, hahaha!

Newcastle drew against Southampton tonight so Liverpool are practically guaranteed 4th place and a crack at the Champions League qualifiers next season. Thank Christ for that! Another season of the UEFA cup would have killed me!

How did everyone else's teams do?

Well here Panathinaikos will probably
get the championship (that's a good thing
cause olympiakos has been winning it for 7 years in a row!)
and they also got the cup last weekend.
My team (PAOK) will probably finish third so we will play
Champion's League next year (if we pass the qualifying stage
of course) . The championship has two more games to end

That would be cool but I don't think so
cause my team will be with the strong teams
so we'll probably play against a not so good team
