try playing dimmu borgir......cradle of filth .....imo the basslines there not that tough and will also help you increase your speed

First thing I played was Silverchair - Freak, it really is easy
Him - Wicked Game, makes u want to die with boredom...its 4 notes..

Iced Earth - Watching Over me, is good to play
I remember I was dead chuffed when the first thing I worked out was the start of Slayer-Bloodline! i know its easy but made me really happy.
Depends how easy u want it..

I just started playing a few days ago too. I learned for whom the bell tolls first. Easy, and pretty fun to jam too. Thanks to every one who posted, now I don't have to start my own "I'm a noob" thread

Try listening to some songs from artists you like, or search www.ultimate-guitar.com for easy tabs and such. RHCP are always fun. (I myself started exactly a year from Dec. 8th. I've already been in two bands...)
