What is Drive/Gain?

I mentioned this in another post but no ones said anything so i thought i'd dedicate it here. It's a simple question:

What is Drive?

and

What is Gain?

i've search the web, but sites only mention drive or gain settings, and not what it actually is.

are they the same or different?

someone explain please.

drive/ gain can be Overdrive or Distortion
Overdrive provides smoother distortion
