well what i normally do is put my hand over the strings which helps a little and also i turn down the top knob on my guitar and leave the other 2 at full volume then when i want to turn it down i turn the middle one down this normally works........if u say u have a les paul then a band that i know that plays one who also has a hughes & kettner full stack turns his guitar down a bit and it still sounds fine and very heavy but i am drunk at the minute so if it dont make sense sorry
