Check out http://www.activebass.com/basics/scales.asp they have a very huge scale chart, any possible scale will be there, learn as many as you can, the more complicated the better..

Learn the Pentatonics, then learn Minor and Major scales.

@Tattered
I once saw a Jewish/Arabic scale...I forgot where though.

Just stating the obvious as always

You do realize of course that you can find just as many useful scales in the music theory section. I have done numerous lessons on the subject of scales. I did one on the modes of the major scale on a scale intervals post by someone else and I also independently made one about Intervals for people who don't understand the roman numeral concept. Then I made one about common exotic scales. I am a guitarist I play bass rarely but most of what I write can be applied to bass as well as guitar, or even keyboard or yeah. It's Music theory so it really doesn't matter as long as you can find the notes on the instrument and on the staff.

This guy/girl wants scales that are easy to read, like the charts! not to find the notes of the scale on his fretboard and then do them..

Then ask me, I don't mind helping people along the way. Eventually the patterns are noticed either way. The shapes soon fall into place and you start using a cage system of visualizing the neck of the instrument. You need to learn the chromatic sequence of notes either way. In fact. . . I might volunteer myself for that one just out of pure boredom. You need to know what notes you are playing either way. It isn't common that I hear a bassist play a chord but it has been done, usually I don't hear more than bass arpeggios or just single root notes. So, to finish this little post the chromatic sequence of notes functions a lot like the alphabet except from A to G. Considering your lowest tone is (in standard tuning) E you start there.

E -F -F#/Gb- G-G#/Ab-A -A#/Bb-B -C -C#/Db- D- D#/Eb- E(one octave higher)

That is the chromatic sequence of notes. translated, open top string in standard E tuning, is an E. Fret 1 top string is an F. Fret 2 top string is an F#/Gb. Fret 3 top string is a G. and so on and so forth up to the 12th fret then it starts over at E again. For now that is something that you should start on. It may not impress people and it may not be very "cool." Later you will have to learn it/do it if you care to progress though. I had to do it a few years after I started playing and trust me, it was so boring that suicide didn't seem like the worst idea ever(lame joke). Anyways, if you already know that tid bit of info it's best to work on learning the formulas and intervals and such with scales. Anyways, tell me if I was way off because I believe I was.

Your definitely right, it is important to know that stuff eventually, but maybe this person doesent really want to do that right now, maybe they do, but its not what they asked for, lets not continue this little argument, its pointless..

Blah, I appreciate the link Tattered posted. I know what tchambliss is saying. I hated learning that too. But yes it does help, but it also helps to just be shown what to do.

To each his own I guess, but thanks for the link Tattered, it was easier than figuring out the hindu scale myself.

Do not mistake me. I don't care to argue only to make information available to those that need it. Point taken though.
