My conclusion is that the top 20 is about right, with the rest being just a slew of semi-random bands in a semi-random order. The journalists are only going to make sure that the top 20 is giving the message they want to give, the rest is just name-checking in no particular order and, to me, irrelevant (hence why I initially only posted the top 20).

Needless to say the list is five years old so it's a little unfair to judge some of the bands' positions in that list according to the esteem they may have garnered since.

(in regards to the top 20) Knock up Morbid Angel and Bathory a few spaces and it's a pretty good list(I don't agree with the overall order but meh). Glad to see they didn't mention shitty questionable-metal bands, pretty good for a popular magazine. They did fail to mention Kreator, that's a big no-no IMO.

Discharge were one of the most influential bands to all the thrash metal bands, also the biggest influence to crust bands like Extreme Noise Terror and grindcore legends Napalm Death as well as Repulsion. They're an oldschool hardcore/thrash kinda thing, very primitive but awesome.

Mayhem does not deserve to be on the list. Bathory is already on it, that pretty much gave birth to the sound of black metal. Mayhem just jumped on the bandwagon.

Not really. Bathory was a primary force in the first wave. But black metal as it is known today is largely a result of the 2nd wave, and Mayhem (in particular Euronymous) can pretty much claim full responsibility for spearheading that movement.

i don't think you can find lists mch better than that anyways, cuz at least it NAMES the good bands, no matter the order. Some listes don't even have those bands

Even if they weren't I could name many Euro thrash bands that were way better than (and just as influential as) Kreator ever were. Destruction and Coroner immediately jump to mind.

Meh, I really don't like 2nd wave stuff. Even if they did give birth to the Scandinavian black metal sound(highly doubtful), they should be nowhere near the top 20, they're a mediocre band.


Way better? Nah. To be honest I like Sodom and Kreator, but never cared at all for Destruction despite being so influential. Coroner are pretty cool but nowhere near as influential as Sodom or Kreator were.

Okay, time to nitpick about a list that was posted two and half years ago and written like 9 years ago.

The only complaint I really feel the need to lodge is the disturbing lack of Deep Purple and Judas Priest. Both had a HUGE influence on the following metal scene, and I'm not talking "Smoke on the Water" or "Breaking the Law". Let's look more at "Speed King", "Highway Star", "Fireball", "Burn", for Deep Purple... early examples of tremolo riffing, fast playing, and double bass. How does that shit get left off? For Judas Priest one can look to "The Ripper", "Dissident Aggressor", "Exciter", and "Hellbent for Leather" and immediately recognize the massive influence they had on the entire metal genre, especially the speed/thrash scene.

I'm just saying, when you're throwing up shit like Burzum and Godflesh in the top 25, you have plenty of room for Deep Purple and Judas Priest. That is all.

Yeah, fairly bad to be honest. Particularly given that Blackmore was one of the earliest guitarists to incorporate classical elements into his playing.
