Altough I like the bands Kalmah posted a lot, I think the best first wave bm bands were Celtic Frost and Bathory.
Yes, 'blood fire death' and 'morbid tales/return of the emperor' are all clasic releases.

Well, I have to say that both Venom and Bathory are my fav of the two
With Bathory, they had the look (leather,chains,spikes..etc.) they also had the perfect black metal sound
But Without Venom, they wouldn't be called 'Black Metal' seeing as how Venom made the song Black Metal and had the most influence on Black Metal they are pretty much the next best
But listening to Venom now I understand that they do sound a lot like Motorhead, just faster.

Its my bullshit opinion, but I'm sticking to it.
Old Mayhem still holds up to a good listen every now and then too. I honestly don't remember the last time I listened to any of it though...

VENOM FOR SURE!Fuckin' awesome! Not excaclty Black Metal(well, actually not even close)but they came up with the term!
Welcome To Hell is a fuckin' super dooper classic!
Never liked the other bands......................
You might as well wanna check out Piledriver, the "Metal Inquisition"lp released in 1984.They consider to be one of the forfathers of BM.They were into sick and dirty Heavy Metal with songs like Sex With Satan,Sodomise The Dead and stuff.A lot of Black Metal/Death Metal bands hail them as their influence(Marduk hava actually covered two songs of them)..........

Well, here is a thought/debate:
Can you name a band with a genre, when that genre hasn't been properly described/codified/evolved/'invented' yet?
IE: first wave of pretty much any (sub)genre.

Hellhammer might be one of the worst bands I've ever heard. Even so, they're still probably my favorite band of the first wave of black metal, followed by Bathory and To Mega Therion era Celtic Frost. I could never get into Mercyful Fate, the vocals just annoy me way too much.

I think King Diamond is badass and funny at the same time.
I also think Merciful Fate isn't Black Metal.
