I've heard good things about their HD147 head. And Napalm Death were using one of their highest end heads(Vetta maybe) on their last record, and tbh I thought they were still using a 5150 on it.

Yeah for recording I think they're cool, but playing through a real amp and playing through a Line 6 anything... the difference is like night and day.

True, Line 6 stuff shines when it comes to recording....until you compare it to the real thing recorded properly. There was a series of clips someone posted over at thegearpage.net with a Bogner Ectascy, Mesa Dual Rec, and Soldano SLO recorded through a 4x12 loaded with Greenbacks and then clips of Line 6's simulations of those amps through a 4x12 Greenback simulation. No question the real amps had a whole different level of depth and presence compared to the emulations. No comparison.

Yep. Unfortunately with more expensive tube amps it makes it a lot harder to get extremely good sounding recordings without the proper knowledge on mic placement, EQing, preamplification, mixing, etc. which is why the sale of podxt's and similar has been going up over the past few years. Most home guitarists don't have the time or money to invest in getting their half stacks/amps to sound awesome on a recording.
I think most XT owners realize that they're not really meant for live use though, I see many XT owners that still use real amps in live situations.

My advice is to get the best amp head you can for the money, assuming you have a cab......didn't you get an Avatar cab w/V30's and G12T's in it? I thought you made a thread about it. BTW I am 2210thrash on the marshall amp forum. Anyhoo, you really should get a Marshall JCM800 2210 head and buy a Boss SD-1 overdrive to boost it, if you want the heaviest, loudest and best tone for brutal shit. Get one made after '86 and you are good to go. The early ones sound like crap. If you don't wanna use a Marshall, get a Peavey 5150 and use the "Rhythm" channel with the gain up fairly high. That is great tone too. you will need to have a bias mod done on it to get the best sound, but even without it the amp sounds great on that channel, believe it or not. The Marshall is your best option, but it will run you at least $800. 5150's are cheaper, but don't have the same crazy-ass harmonics and "presence". Don't bother running an amp modeler unless your recording. They don't cut live, at all.

Behemoth are using a Mesa, Bogner, and Promod 100 on their newest album, be sure to check it out when it's out. That is as properly recorded as you can get.

Yeah. When I played with Behemoth in Canada the guy had a Bognaer Uberschall. It sounded pretty damn heavy. They look cool too. but $2600 is a little crazy for an amp head, and the cabs are a grand too. Yikes!

Someday, I would really like to play one of those for REAL, the first time I saw one getting reviewed in Guitar Player magazine, I creamed. The PODxt Live's Metal Shop pack add-on had a Bogner Uberschall emulation algorithm on it, and it was easily the worst amp model in the entire collection.
Valtiel, thanks for that link, the differences between the real and the fakes are very eye-opening!  |
