I've now heard The Unspoken King in its entirety and I have to say it's not a terrible album... if you completely disassociate the proper noun "Cryptopsy" from it. I remember stating on these boards that I was quite interested in how the band would develop after Once Was Not, largely on account of that album not being a particularly impressive album in its own right. A little misguided now in hindsight...
If you don't think of the album as a death metal record then you may be able to take a step back and actually gleen some enjoyment from it. I've read somewhere, can't remember if it was here or in a magazine, that the album is more akin to, albeit a more inferior (in my opinion), The Red Chord than prior Cryptopsy output. I have to agree with that statement.
I liken The Unspoken King to McDonald's and KFC: don't get me wrong, I fuckin' love the Colonel's fine array of fried chicken products as much as the next guy, but if I go into a McDonald's I expect to be served a Big Mac when I ask for one.
I will say one thing, though: They've improved in the vocals department, with new guy Matt McGachy easily outstripping Lord Worm's patchy output on Once Was Not. The clean vocals are also a welcome addition, the first instance of which being juxtaposed with some nice dischordance to offset the melodic intent.
I would have prefered this album to have been released under a different moniker so I didn't have to file it alongside And Then You'll Beg, Whisper Supremacy and None So Vile, but there are some highlights on this album - you've just got to not compare this record with the aforementioned genre classics. Still doesn't hide the utter disappointment, though.

I keep on going back to Complete Regicide. It's the only track I can stand to listen to on the whole record, and strangely, I find it very well done.

So I just read this thread in its entirety, after having ordered "The Unspoken King" without listening to it before hand. The reason I did this was because I was ordering other cds (got my hands on some disgorge and whatnot) and noticed a new Cryptopsy album so I added it.
Now, one can understand why I did this: with the heading Cryptopsy I naturally assumed it would be... good. So no need to listen to it before hand. This isn't something I normally do, I do enjoy to hear what I'm buying before hand. But come on this is Cryptopsy (I'll be honest and say I didn't really have a problem with "OWN", sure it's no Blasphemy but it's not terrible).
My cds arrived today and upon listening to the unspoken king I have to say I was shocked (especially when I saw a new singer). Clearly I'm not as up-to-date on my metal news as all of you. I'm going to go with what johnmansley has said a post above. Adding to that, there's a song or two on it that I was happy with; a couple nice solos that sounded as they should but overall it didn't have the same feel at all. Clean vocals aren't something I'm vehemently against, but here they don't gel very well when thinking of how the band used to be. It doesn't have the power and ferocity of past albums. I regret purchasing it, but whatever that was my choice. Here's hoping for a revival of the old Cryptopsy.

Revival of old Cryptopsy? I think it's impossible considering the fact that Lord Worm seemed to have lost interest in the death metal scene and John had grown tired of playing extreme music. John (or Jon L, however he spells his name) was an important and vital member of the group since he was able to write most of Once Was Not album and not make it suck... And I'm pretty sure Flo had been urging him to slow down a bit and write something that would appeal to the mainstream when they were brainstorming and composing songs for OWN, but thank god those requests by Flo were taken lightly by Jon.
Anyway, I think Cryptopsy are dead. The thought of them possibly playing deathcore never crossed my mind. I was kind of expecting them to add a bit more black metal influences when I first heard they hired a female pianist/keyboardist. As a result I ended up being very disappointed at the outcome; having pussy-ass clean vocals that were off-pitch, uncreative deathcore "beatdownz," watered down death metal vocals, and fretboard wankery.
The fact that Flo also talked down and insulted his loyal and hopeful fans because they showed disapproval towards the musical direction Cryptopsy took pisses me off. Fuck Flo, all that respect I had for him since the days I was considered the biggest misfit and loser in middle school and high school is gone...
Even my girlfriend, who doesn't listen to death metal agrees that this band should have changed their name since many of the band's fans were expecting the new material to keep its integrity by keeping the trademark elements of their previous albums but still show some sort of progression by adding a new twist thats not so exaggeratively different.

I don't think Jon had too much input on Once Was Not beyond writing "Luminum" and maybe a few other riffs. His return to the band would be very welcome but I can't see it happening.
Speaking of Jon Levasseur, does anybody know if he's released any solo material?

Nah, Jon wrote as much of OWN as anyone else. As far as the recording goes, he only did Luminum.
On the drum DVD Flo released a couple of years ago, there's footage of Jon, Eric, Alex and Flo playing a medley made from 3-4 OWN songs. He definately had a hand in the writing of it.

honestly the album isn't half bad. Granted it's not the Cryptopsy that we all know and love, but on it's own it's not half bad. It's definitely got it's moments but it's nothin spectacular. I'll give it a few spins but a month or two from now I doubt it'll get too many plays.

The lame intro clip aside, the new guy sounds really, really awful.

Yeah, I know. It was just a fantasy I had when writing what I wrote. It's really depressing, especially when going back to listen to songs like Crown of Horns, Defenestration or Shroud...

Man, that's still a terrible thing to think about for me. It's the awful truth though.
EDIT: Wow, sudden realization: I never got a chance to see Cryptopsy live before TUK. Not that I was ever in the area where I could go and see them without much trouble, but that's not really the point.

Very much so, I'm disappointed in myself. But how was I to know this would happen to such a great band?

Same here, never had the chance to see a full live set by Cryptopsy. But there's always that bootlegged video of Cryptopsy playing during the Blasphemy Made Flesh days.
