so yeah

i was thinking about purchasing an amp for my vocals, and i wanted to know what extras i might use to make the singing a little less harsh on my chords.

so far i think a little bit of distortion and reverb will help. any other suggestions?

in my band, i use clean singing, growling, and high pitched screaming.

i know the recordings aren't the best, but i always seem to get sick the weekend before we record. we'll be recording again soon, so i want to fool around with effects before i try again.

i've googled topics like vocal effects and stuff, but i don't really know what to search for. so yeah, thanks in advance for any advice.

(i really don't want a 'learn to sing right' thread. i sing rather well if i say so myself, i just want to experiment with electronic effects.)

Pain is the body's way of telling you not to do something. If singing is harsh on your throat to the point that you think you need effects to help it, then you really need to practice your singing. Getting a new amp isn't gonna fix that, only practice and proper technique will. Look around this forum, as pretty much any vocal technique for metal has been covered already.

Also, make sure your bassist is in tune the next time you record. I had a very hard time getting through "Darkness" because he was so off.

i appreciate the advice, and i realize the recordings aren't up to par. we need to practice more i guess.

i guess i phrased my question badly. Now that i'm reading it, i realize i kinda said the opposite of what i intended to.

I know why my voice crapped out after recording, i wasn't using my diaphragm enough and was doing it with bad technique for 7 and a half hours.

I know i need to tweak and improve my technique, but i also like the way effects make vocals sound. a little reverb would give it a more whole sound, and some distortion would give it that kick- ass crackling effect. these two effects i've heard used by the vocalist of A Life Once Lost (among others), and i was wondering what they might do to a voice like mine.

i guess my real question is this:
what effects sound cool on vocals?

I am not a big fan of effects, but sometimes layering/panning the vocal tracks can give off an awesome sound.

i mean like effects that can be used in a show or something. like distortion and reverr can be used anyt time, it's instant, if you use an amp that has them.

are there any other effects like that that would sound good with my vocals?

you can use gain, or you can cup the mic a little bit to help focus the vocals into a direct part of the mic, which adds a little distortion physically without it sounding fake or digital, these two will help so you dont have to shred your vocal chords as much. expecially if you're going for a growling tecnique.

you dont have to worry as much about it recorded, because if you find someone to mix and master it, and they're somewhat decent at it, they can add various tweaks and program plugins to make your vocals sound more pristine.

i have a behringer PA that comes with like 98 effects built into it, I usually use a small amount of the distortion that it has, because it adds gain without the mic volume increasing and a tiny amount of reverb.

You could have like an echo fade-in. Old school trick, refer to Sepultura's 'Airse'. Or just one of those momentary reversed fade-in things, like somewhere in the grunted section in Goatwhore's 'Eucharist Blood Guilt'. Sounds quite eerie. Sure there are better examples, but can't think of them.

I wonder what growling into Paul Masvidal's synth would sound like...
