Anyone know how to achieve this tone? To me it's just about one of the heaviest I've ever heard.

It's Therion from their demo "Time Shall Tell", which was released way back in 1990.

To me it sounds like a typical "scooped mids" tone. What kind of amp, if any, would be suitable for that kind of tone?
