I prefer the first way as it reduces the need for extra movement in my picking hand. I've never had any trouble in hammering to the 17th fret from the 12th, though - have you got small fingers?

It'd be a good idea to just practise doing |-12h17p12h17p12-(ad infinitum)-| as it'll build up strength and accuracy in your pinky and help with suppleness.
