Fair do's, but Bones says "The more friction between the back of your mouth and esophagus, the more you get that sewer sound" .... I'm a bit confused

Infact I've always been confused when people say not to sing with your throat. It took me a while to figure out the pushing from your diaphragm and I'm still not great at it but surely you've got to put a fair bit of strain on your throat to make that sort of noise?
