i naturally use alternate picking for almost everything, just practice a lot of stuff with alternate pickin, as in all the riffs/songs you know

after a few weeks itll come naturally and you wont...

using a thicker pick and compression really does...

using a thicker pick and compression really does help a lot

and a lot of practice, make sure your picking level (perpendicular) to the string, so the up or down strokes arnt advanatged to one another
