I was having the same problem until I turned my pick at an angle - 45 degrees was a little extreme for me, so I settled at like 25 or 30 degrees. It helped a lot!

I totally agree with RomikQ - there are some amazing musicians who play metal. I think that most pop "musicians" don't know crap about music, but most metalheads know some theory stuff like chords...
